Mango Jalapeño Preserve – My favourite summer fruit paired with spicy jalapeno peppers the preserve was fruity with a mild spice and tanginess to it. The chunky preserve is a perfect accompaniment to sof cream cheese on a cracker. It can also be used as a marinade or as an ingredient for a sweet-spicy sauce. Red Pepper Relish - Made with slow-roasted bell peppers the relish is perfect for sandwiches and can also be paired with cheeses and crackers. The sweet and spicy favour makes it an ideal dip too. Fig Almond Conserve - A full-bodied preserve with fgs almonds and a hint of cinnamon it is great with plain bread. The sweet conserve mostly tasted of fgs. Orange Mustard – This mustard spread came tangy and pungent. It acts as great seasoning when roasting veggies or meat. It can also be added to marinades and dressings to give a spicy twist. Anupama Shivacharya steps in for a taste 44 WBN LOVES Art Deco Asian 1Q1 is the newest restaurant in town promising authentic Asian and Peruvian fare. Set in the regal Indian Express Building on Queens Road the name of the restaurant is inspired by the same. It is derived from the number of the building and pin code of its address - No.1 Queens Road Bangalore 1. First Impressions We chose to drop by on a weekend noon and were immediately sold on by the ambience which was lovely and unlike any other in the city. As we entered we notice the art deco themed green walls high ceilings glass pane windows wooden tables and comfortable cushioned chairs. The restaurant is partitioned into an elegant fne dining area for a relaxed sit-down meal a high-energy space that houses a stage an oval-shaped island bar and an outdoor alfresco dining area where guests can sit by the robatayaki grill. What we drank We chose to have the Smoking Jazz which came with smoked balsamic vinegar and elderfower syrup stirred together with Gordon’s gin. The simply presented drink came with complex favours and complemented the dishes served wonderfully. From the mocktails we chose Asian Afair – litchi juice pomegranate and galangal. The mild taste of galangal made it refreshing and light. We also asked for the Blueberry Tango which came with homemade blueberry puree citrusy favour from orange and lime combined with rosemary and a splash of ginger ale. What We Ate From the Small Plates section We started with the Thai Spring Roll – vegetable spring rolls with a side of sweet chilli sauce which were a delight to bite into. Next up was the Edamame with Chilli and Garlic – the simplest dish of the lot and my personal favourite of the day the dish came with green soy beans steamed in sea salt. The spice teamed with garlic and the juicy soy bean was almost addictive an example of how simple favours can make bold statements.

We then moved on to try the dumplings and started with the Vegetable and Chives Dumpling – velvety sof steamed dumplings stufed with chopped lotus root celery carrot chives and water chestnuts. The mild crunch from the vegetables was especially enjoyable. Next up was the Steamed Fish with Oyster Sauce – fsh fllet wrapped in thin radish sliced and steamed. The Chicken Gyoza was a recommendation from the chef. The Japanese style chicken dumpling was flled with juicy minced chicken scallion soy and pan seared to fnish. The sear gave an enjoyable textural contrast to the dish. We then proceeded to try the Sushi platter which came with Salmon and Unagi Sushi Nigiri served on sushi rice Sashimi of Tuna Scallops and Hamachi – all placed on a shiso leaf and sliced daikon and Salmon Avocado Roll. Each of the fshes were delightfully fresh and tasted of the ocean. This was followed by Nikkei Salmon Sashimi – Peruvian style thinly sliced raw fsh with lime leche tigre combined with sweetness from the passion fruit crunchy sweet potato bits and sweet corn all leading to an explosion of bold favours in the mouth. We fnished the meal with Massaman Lamb Curry which came with slow cooked lamb in authentic Massaman gravy from southern Thailand. This was served with Hainanese Chicken Rice – poached boneless chicken cooked in stock served with sauce and broth both made of chicken. Sweet Endings For dessert we were served the Matcha and Raspberry Ice Cream with Meringue Cake – a meringue ice cream cake made with green tea raspberry ice cream with hazelnut praline pistachio crumble raspberry coulis. The tart raspberry favour combined with earthy matcha and nuttiness from the praline and pistachio crumble was a blissful end the meal.
