What is Intrauterine Insemination IUI Do you still consider IVF as the only treatment to cure Infertility If yes then you need to be aware of the various other treatments that can aid in treating infertility and welcoming Parenthood. Sri Fertility Clinic is the best IUI Center in Hyderabad. It is led by Dr. M Tripurasundari who is considered to be one of the best infertility specialists in Hyderabad. In this blog the doctor talks about Intrauterine Insemination in detail. Why opt for Intrauterine Insemination The process of placing the sperm directly into the uterus which puts them closer to the egg is known as an IUI. This technique is usually carried out if the woman doesn’t have a partner or if her partner has borderline male factor infertility. This technique usually helps those couples who have had problems in conceiving before. Mostly couples resort to IVF after making an attempt with IUI in case of unexplained infertility. This technique requires the sperm to be washed and concentrated unlike the natural conception where the sperm have to travel from the vagina up to the fallopian tubes. How does IUI help The foremost benefit of IUI is its less-expensive and non-intrusive nature in comparison of IVF. However IUI can be ultimately advantageous in the following cases: • unexplained infertility • tender endometriosis • problems with the cervix or cervical mucus • low sperm count and sperm motility • issues with ejaculation or erection • same sex couple wishing to conceive • a single woman wishing to conceive • to avoid passing on a genetic defect from the male to the child

Although in certain scenarios IUI does not prove to be effective. They are: • severe endometriosis • women with both fallopian tubes removed or blocked • women suffering from pelvic infections • men suffering from Azoospermia Timeline during the IUI process: IUI is a quick and painless process hardly requiring anaesthesia. It is carried out when the woman ovulates naturally and during the time the sperm are placed into her uterus. It may also be done along with Ovarian Stimulation i.e. prompting the ovaries to release multiple eggs that can increase the chances of pregnancy. Once the doctor prescribes IUI as the best treatment for you you shall experience the stated timeline: 1. Doctor visits on your period for ultrasounds blood work and medication instructions. 2. 10-16 days post the medication the doctor shall determine whether you are ovulating or not. 3. On the day of the procedure the male partners’ semen sample shall be collected or the donor sperm will be thawed. 4. The sperm washing and concentration takes place in the lab to avoid irritation in the uterus. 5. The doctor uses a speculum to gently open the vagina and visualize your cervix. 6. Using a long thin tube the sperm is placed into the uterus by passing it through the cervix. 7. In rare cases women may experience vaginal cramping or bleeding post insemination. 8. You can take a Pregnancy Test two weeks after the IUI procedure.

Are there any risks associated to IUI Risks of minor infections post IUI are possible. Also there is a risk of multiple babies in case medications are used for ovulation induction. Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome i.e. an enlarged ovary fluid build-up in the abdomen and cramping may occur in cases where ovaries over-respond to fertility medications. However all these risks can be avoided as the doctor may take proper care and preventive measures during the IUI process. Conclusion: IUI success rates may vary in accordance with factors such as age underlying fertility diagnosis and usage of fertility drugs. Considering all the facts Intrauterine Semination is a relatively low-risk treatment and a great option for couples who are trying to conceive. Consulting the doctor is advisable as he might be able to select the best course of treatment for you and IUI may be an effective one as well.
