Mark 12:18-27 :

Mark 12:18-27 The Question about Man's Resurrection

Slide 2:

18 And Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection; and they asked him a question, saying, 19 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man must take the wife, and raise up children for his brother. 20 There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no children; 21 and the second took her, and died, leaving no children; and the third likewise; 22 and the seven left no children. Last of all the woman also died. 23 In the resurrection whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.” 24 Jesus said to them, “Is not this why you are wrong, that you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God?

Slide 3:

25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 26 And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? 27 He is not God of the dead, but of the living; you are quite wrong.”

The Pharisees failed will the Sadducees also fail? :

The Sadducees believed in the Torah, the first 5 Books of the Bible, and thus in the Mosaic law & Levitical purity They were more politically and practically minded than were the Pharisees. They relied on logic and as a result placed little importance in faith. They didn’t believe the whole Old Testament, just the Torah. They didn’t believe in bodily resurrection or eternal life. They didn’t believe in angels or demons. They were willing to compromise their values with Rome in order to maintain their status and position. The Pharisees failed will the Sadducees also fail?

12:18-27 The Question About the Resurrection :

The Sadducees had already tried this question on the Pharisees and they were unable to answer it. One wife and seven brothers. 23 In the resurrection whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.” The real question was about the doctrine of resurrection. Because the Sadducees believed only in the Torah, Jesus quoted from Exodus 3:6 to prove there is life after death. God spoke of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob years after their deaths as if they were still alive. 12:18-27 The Question About the Resurrection

12:24-27 You Are Wrong :

12:24-27 You Are Wrong In response to their questions, Jesus shows their sneakiness in their attempt to trip him up. He exposed their hypocrisy in the question about paying taxes and now shows their shallow understanding of their own Scriptures (v. 24). Good Jews and good Christians in Mark’s audience are expected to pay taxes to lawful civil leaders and give praise and worship to God (vv. 15–17). Jews and Christians who really understand Scripture should also know that “the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob” and of the risen Jesus is “not God of the dead but of the living” (vv. 24–27).
