1 Corinthians 7:32-35 :

1 Corinthians 7:32-35 Be concerned about the things of the Lord that you may be holy.

PowerPoint Presentation:

32 I want you to be free from anxieties. The unmarried man is anxious about the affairs of the Lord, how to please the Lord; 33 but the married man is anxious about worldly affairs, how to please his wife, 34 and his interests are divided. And the unmarried woman or girl is anxious about the affairs of the Lord, how to be holy in body and spirit; but the married woman is anxious about worldly affairs, how to please her husband. 35 I say this for your own benefit, not to lay any restraint upon you, but to promote good order and to secure your undivided devotion to the Lord. The Holy Bible : Revised Standard Version Second Catholic edition (2006), with the ecclesiastical approval of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Thomas Nelson Publishing for Ignatius Press. The English translations of the works of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) who also uses the RSV-CE or its Second Edition.

Have you ever wondered?:

Have you ever wondered? Have you ever wondered why the Church is opposed to priests, sisters and nun being married. This reading really spells out the reasons. “An unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord,” Being married is itself stressful, there is the job, maybe you spouse also works, who will be at home for the children when school ends. Who will go to the basketball game? How can I please my spouse? An unmarried priest doesn’t have these anxieties but they have been replaced with other anxieties.

PowerPoint Presentation:

How will I pull our Church community together. How can I best deal with the different personalities on the Church council? I was called to the hospital at 3 AM because one of the parishoners needed to be anointed and given their last confession and then I had to rush back to Church to celebrate the 7 AM Mass. That was followed by endless meetings and I so looked forward to bed but the phone rang and I needed to leave again. Notice that everything our fictional priest did was related to the church and the works of the Lord. Ask yourself this question, if he were married, would he have the time to be a good husband, a good father and a good provider? Like so many other jobs, the priesthood looks easy until you choose to live it.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Verse 34 “And the unmarried woman or girl is anxious about the affairs of the Lord” A woman who accepts a religious life finds herself in the same situation as our fictional priest. Had she married her attention would be divided among husband, children, friends and community. The priest, sister or nun is not distracted by the responsibilities of family, and can focus their lives on the service to God and the building up of His Kingdom.
