Reasons of the Heart:

Reasons of the Heart It is no longer Father Carlos Mora who lives, but Christ who lives in him. With permission from: [email protected]

Father Carlos:

Father Carlos A family from Guadalajara vacationing near Los Angeles headed to a local parish for Sunday Mass. After Mass, a parishioner asked them where they were from, and when he found out, asked them to wait a minute. The parish priest wanted to speak with them. He came out and greeted the family, saying he was from Guadalajara as well, and he asked how Father Carlos Mora was doing. They were amazed. How did this priest know Father Mora? He explained: “When I was little, it was Father Mora who invited me to become a priest, and it’s because of him that I am a priest today.”

It was because Christ had called Father Mora to become a priest that that the both of us are now priests.

Father Mora LIVED next to Christ – literally. If you couldn’t find him early in the morning, you didn’t look hard enough because he was in the chapel behind the altar, right next to the tabernacle. He felt and was closer to Jesus that way. During the day he would take a chair, and go behind the altar again, and sit right in front of the tabernacle to pray the Psalms. It wasn’t enough to be right next to Christ. He spoke to his Friend and Savior out loud, since no one else was present. At least that’s what he thought. Since he didn’t put his hearing aids in, he couldn’t hear others enter the chapel. After all, God doesn’t speak in your ear, but in your heart. He would tell Jesus how much he loved him.

The center of his day was the Celebration of the Eucharist. The Sunday after having one of his lungs removed because of cancer, he decided to get up and celebrate Mass. It was an agony. But he didn’t want a day to go by without holding Jesus in his hands. When he came to the consecration, he said, “This is MY body, which will be given up for you.” For the moment he too shared in Christ’s pain. He talked to the Blessed Virgin Mary about Christ too, she had given birth to Jesus and knew him so well. The Mother of Jesus had also trained Father Mora to love Christ.

Every day he prayed to her, going to the store to buy flowers for her. He would prepare the bouquet himself. He wanted to do it for her because she guided him to Christ. Just as she and John the Baptist had led people to Jesus so did Father Mora. He loved Christ and enjoyed him so much that he asked young men if they wanted to become priests. He wanted them to have the same joyful experience of Christ that he had, his discipleship led many others following Christ in a special way through the sacrament of Holy Orders. In the Gospel of John we read:

35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples, 36 and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” 37 The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. We all need to be like the two disciples: Andrew and John and follow Jesus where ever he leads us. Some will be led to the altar of marriage, some to seminaries, some to the workplace and others to the missions. The key to a full and rewarding life is to follow the lead of Christ and be his disciple in the family, his disciple in the seminary or his disciple in the workplace. Father Mora’s call to discipleship was the priesthood, he listened and followed. Though his discipleship he led many others to recognize, “the Lamb of God.” Who will you help to recognize the “the Lamb of God,” your spouse, your child, your co-worker or your community?
