Video games have many categories, based on gameplay. These categories are usually called Genres The main genres of video games are: Action, Adventure, Action-Adventure, Role-play, Simulation, and Strategy These can be further divided into several categories, such as Platforming , Fighting, Survival horror, and Shooter, to name a few .

Action:

Action Action games are games that emphasize physical challenges, such as Hand Eye Coordination and reaction time. Action games have levels, in which you must complete the objective to complete it. These levels are not always linear, and sometimes you can by pass some of them. Action games usually have enemies, which have certain patterns that, if you can figure them out, makes them easier to defeat or avoid. Other aspects of action games can include your character having health, though quite a few action games just have lives instead. Also, some games have a time limit, forcing you to complete a level within a certain amount of time. Otherwise, you lose a life .

Action Continued:

Action Continued Some action games have you collect weapons to use. Usually, the games that do that are shooters, a type of action game that focuses mainly on projectile weapons. Action games can be further categorized into Platforming , Hack and Slash, Beat ' Em Up, Maze games, Fighting games, and Pinball games Example of action games are: Mario , Killer Instinct, Pac-man, and Bioshock Action games are the most common type of video games.

Adventure:

Adventure adventure games are a type of video game in which you take the role of protagonist in an interactive story driven by exploration and puzzle-solving instead of physical challenge These games usually have a main story that you follow, usually playing the hero of the story, and, unlike most other games, are incredibly story driven, meaning that your character will usually go through Character development Straight adventure games usually have limited combat or action challenges. Adventure games that have a lot of either of those are actually action-adventure games .

Adventure Continued:

Adventure Continued Adventure games feature item collecting as a way of solving puzzles Due to their story driven nature, adventure games tend to include a lot of dialog between your character and other characters to move the plot along. Adventure games are one of the oldest types of games. Examples of adventure games include Escape from Monkey island, Myst , Catherine, and the Ace Attorney Series

Action-Adventure:

Action-Adventure An Action-Adventure game is a type of game that combines aspects of action games, such as combat and physical challenges, and adventure games, such as puzzles and story Examples of Action Adventure games include Legend of Zelda, God of War, Tomb Raider, and Prince of Persia

Role-play:

Role-play Role-play games are games based around the same mechanics as Pen and Paper roleplays , such as Dungeons and Dragons It is similar to Adventure games, due to being plot driven, and sometimes contains puzzles In Role-plays, or RPGs, you generally control a character, or a group of characters, which is called a party, to go complete quests

RPG Continued:

RPG Continued These types of games usually have a large world to explore, though how much of it is accessible at one time usually depends on where the story lets you go Characters in these games gain levels, which increase various stats, making fighting enemies easier RPGs usually use turn based combat, which is a combat system where you and your enemies take turns attacking. However, some RPGs use the same type of combat as action games Examples of Role-playing games include Final Fantasy, Golden Sun, and Paper Mario

Simulation:

Simulation Simulations are video games that try to simulate aspects of a real or fictional reality Subgenres of Simulations include: Construction and Management, Life, and Sports Construction and management Simulations are games where players build, expand or manage fictional communities or projects with limited resources Life simulations are games where the player lives or controls one or more artificial life forms. A life simulation game can revolve around "individuals and relationships, or it could be a simulation of an ecosystem

Simulations Continued Sports games are games that simulates the playing of a sport, such as Football, Basketball, or Soccer Others are Dating Sims, which focus on dating, Medical Simulation, Photography, and Vehicular Simulation games Examples of Simulations are The Sims, Utopia, Trauma Center, Pokémon Snap, Tamagotchi , and Tiger Woods

Strategy:

Strategy Strategy games are a genre that emphasizes skillful thinking and planning to achieve victory Strategy games emphasize strategic, tactical, and sometimes logistical challenges. These games are similar to RPGs, sometimes using Real-Time Strategy, and other times using Turn based Strategy Examples of Strategy games include Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, StarCraft, Command and Conquer, and Empire: Total War

There are many other genres, such as: Music Games, which most commonly challenge the player to follow sequences of movement or develop specific rhythms. Some games require the player to input rhythms by stepping with their feet on a dance pad, or using a device similar to a specific musical instrument. Examples include Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution Party Games, which are video games developed specifically to be multiplayer games. Normally, party games have a variety of mini-games that range between collecting more of a certain item than other players or having the fastest time at something. Examples include Mario Party and Sonic Shuffle
