The Parables of Jesus :

The Parables of Jesus

The Historical Jesus:

The Historical Jesus Scholars state that the parables are probably the most authentic sayings of the historical Jesus Parable--Greek 'Parabole;' Hebrew 'Mashal;' meaning to place side by side, as in comparison Simile or Metaphoric speech

Example:

Example 'The kingdom of heaven is like a leaven which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.' Matt. 13:33b 'To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? It is like leaven which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.' Luke 13:20b

Characteristics of a Parable:

Characteristics of a Parable Thwarted expectations 'He who is last shall be first, and first, last' Authentic parables reflect an oral structure--tightly compressed style; concrete, vivid images; good and bad clearly identified; things happen in sets of three; Meant to tease the mind into active thinking realized eschatology 'the kingdom of heaven is at hand' the parable imparts something more than information--it imparts G-d’s message

Layers of Tradition:

Layers of Tradition

Example:

Example Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign shall be give to this generation. Mark 8:12 An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but not sign shall be give to it except the sign of Jonah. Matt 16:4 This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah. Luke 11:29 An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Matt 12:39-40

How to identify editing and additions:

How to identify editing and additions The parable will have commentary to explain or justify itself: Jesus said 'The Kingdom of the Father is like a merchant who had a consignment of merchandise and who discovered a pearl. That merchant was shrewd. He sold the merchandize and bought the pearl alone for himself. You too, seek his unfailing and enduring treasure where no moth comes near to devour and no worm destroys.' Thom 76:1

Example to try::

Example to try: And he told them a parable, to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He said 'In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor regarded man; and there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying 'Vindicate me against my adversary.' For a while he refused; but afterward he said to himself, 'though I neither fear God nor regard man, yet because this widow bothers me, I will vindicate her, or she will wear me out by her continual coming.' And the Lord said, 'Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God vindicate his elect, who cry to him day and night? I tell you, he will vindicate them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on earth?'
