Kisses in the Nederends Novel is set on fictional island of Tipotia Satire- Social and Political Faith Healing and Witchdoctors Mystics and Healers-Religious Medical Profession Academic/University Overseas Aid Experts

Kisses in the Nederends The search for a cure for Oilei Bomboki’s anal fistula is the narrative device used to explore various aspects of society in the Pacific. Communal nature and sharing is extended to bad luck, gossip and rumours. Cure ranges from Faith healing, Witch-doctors to Meditation and Medical Procedures Each new cure brings with it a story about the particular practitioner with comments on their methods as well as place in society Satire is used in the exaggeration of the healers and their methods Comedy and Humour comes about with mix of verbal, situational and physical comedy. There is a loudness to the humour typical of the Pacific. Use of Swear Word, Double Entendre’s (Allusions to sexual acts) and Body Parts and Functions. The use of a range of a names with associated meanings adds to the humour, often in ironic ways Oilei Bomboki, Corporal Butako etc

Kisses in the Nederends Satire on Faith Healing Aspects of faith and its basis in beliefs that can go wrong. Societal place for such practices-faith-healers/witch doctors/natural medicines-dottores Official/S Self-promotion and creation of “industries” among bureaucracy and academia that does not provide cures/solutions but is self-serving, - payment of per diems, free trips, food etc at conferences World View of the Pacific as Underdeveloped/Third World. Pan Pacific Ideologies – “The Pacific Way” is satirized as an empty slogan with local and individual differences undercutting any idea of a common Pacific way of looking at life or dealing with problems.

Kisses in the Nederends Central Concern- Object of Satire is Society and its Structures Analogy of the Uppertuks and Lowertuks Division of the World – First and Third Looks at Inter-dependency of the Whole-In Human Body and in Human Society Proposes radical point of commonality- Anus and Love of It as Beginning of a New Humanity based on Peace and Understanding Satirizes aspects of faith/belief – religious/spiritual/leader based/political as a open to propaganda and brain-washing so that society is less and less questioning

Kisses in the Nederends Search for a Cure and Travel associated with it become the main narrative device to move the plot of the novel along. The second level of narrative movement is based on Oilei’s personal relationships- Wife/ Babu Bahut/ Villagers/ Officials/ Healers/ Doctors/ Embassy/ Third Level is ALLEGORICAL – Divisions of Society First/Third (Upper and Lower Tuktuks) Anthropological Fourth Level: Bodily Functions Divisions of Head (Intellect) vs Anus (Unseen/Dirty therefore Unworthy) Need to reconcile difference between first and third world/ Head and Anus in order to bring about peace and progress

Witch doctors/Herbal-Medical Anecdotal structure- short conversational stories usually constructing a joke or centered around exaggerated satirical incidences. Use of realistic/colloquial dialogues-use of vernacular (mainly Fijian) Characters are drawn from the larger spread of people in the Pacific- Islanders/Europeans/Indo-Fijians/Asians/Others

Role of Expatriates/Experts Relationship between Trade/Aid/Development Migration and Pacific Diaspora-Aspiration to Move-Greener Pastures – Corporal Butako’s letter to NZ Embassy Calls for Better Understanding by using extreme allegorical example of “Kissing the Anus” as means towards a better world.
