Development in Siem Reap It has been 20 years since I first travelled to Cambodia and the magical town of Siem Reap. A great deal has happened in 20 years the degree of development has been unprecedented. On first arriving in 1993 the immediate impression was lack of services open to the tourist. Certainly there was still the tuk tuk drivers eager to drive you on a tour of the temples of Angkor for the day. Hotels were popping up but other services were limited. There have been no ATMs and little else to accomplish if one desired to have a break from visiting the temples. Fast forward 20 years and the situation has completely changed through a lot of investment knowledge and innovation. Its been possible through development aid. The tenacity of the neighborhood individuals who despite most of the atrocities they have experienced are keen to show off their wonderful country and take the opportunities they have. Its also been possible as much Khmers who escaped throughout the Khmer Rouge era are returning with the knowledge theyve gained abroad bringing positive change to the neighborhood community. With many local businesses preparing for the new tourist season starting in October dont just consider a tour to Siem Reap as just a quick temple visit. A moment to possess a look at what else is on offer and how it adds to the local economy. Horse-riding in Siem Reap is one particular tour for those with only a little adventure in mind you will want to take a horse riding tour for 1-3 hours through rural countryside passing streams rice fields and local villages. The tours are suited to beginners and children and are a fun solution to separation visiting the temples or just for experiencing different things on a tour to Cambodia. For those with a mind for heights and planning to catch some aerial views and photographs of the majestic Angkor Wat Temple here is another balloon ride over Angkor. The German made helium balloon doesnt actually move because it is attached to a string but ascends around 200 metres for a 10 minute trip which allows you to get some good great photographs and an aerial view of the eighth wonder of the world If you discover yourself in Siem Reap on a Sunday evening a good experience is just a traditional Khmer dance show with live traditional music placed on by the Cambodian Childrens House of Peace an orphanage in Siem Reap. The show is held every Sunday during the school term without fail at 7pm. It is completely free but do produce a donation with their worthy cause

if visiting. If youre visiting during rainy season theres a rain cover so dont allow that place you off. It is really worth the visit. There are needless to say a great many other attractions and activities to choose from on your own short visit to Siem Reap and Cambodia. Keep your brain open and dont forget how far Cambodia has come in the last 20 years
