The rich historical heritage of Tunisia Its past is very varied: Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines and Arabs have left their legacy scattered throughout the territory: the Medina of Susa, the Amphitheater of El Jem, the great mosque of Keruan, but, just 20 km from the capital of Tunisia, there is a powerful find, the archaeological park of Carthage. An ancient city founded by the Phoenicians in the ninth century B.C. It came to have about half a million inhabitants and, today, its Roman remains can be visited, starting with the tofet, a sanctuary dedicated to the gods Tanit and Bâal Hammon, place of worship and sacrifices.
