The Samsung P2 looks like a less-polished version of the iPod touch, with a 3-inch touchscreen that’s oriented vertically in a 16:9 aspect ratio (480 by 272 pixels). The LED just below the screen looks like it should be a dedicated Home/Menu button, but it’s actually nothing more than a status indicator light.

Review: Samsung P2 Portable Media Player

Even though Apple has a stranglehold on the MP3 player market we are still seeing some really good devices coming out from the other players in the industry. While no one is expecting to topple Apple’s position any time soon, flash memory is cheap and abundant and the iPod is missing certain features so there are chances for other other companies to step in. One of Samsung’s hottest new offerings is the P2.

Entering Samsung's line of portable media players at the top, the P2 does everything well. We loved the 3-inch widescreen, we loved the way it handled user-generated content and loved that we had so many options for both the media we put on the device and the way we decided to actually transfer the media to the device.

|
Applephobes with an aversion to the iTunes universe have a lot of options for MP3 players these days, but few are as stylish as Samsung’s K3 series, with their lacquer-like metal casings and very sexy backlit, touch-sensitive controls. Even the staff at a chi-chi downtown home design boutique were impressed with my red YP-K3 player, with its vivid pop-art screen graphics and sleek looks.

Samsung’s new flagship portable media player, the P2, is sleek and svelte enough to catch the eye of potential iPhone or iPod Touch buyers. Sammy’s touchscreen interface isn’t nearly as sophisticated and fluid as Apple’s, and the player’s lack of WiFi may be a dealbreaker for some, but the built-in Bluetooth is handy for wireless listening and even for taking calls. We took our P2 for a spin and found it a worthy competitor to heavyweights like the iPod touch and the Microsoft Zune.
