The DICOM Standard
Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) is a standard for handling, storing, printing, and transmitting information in medical imaging, radiology & PACS. It includes a file format definition and a network communications protocol, using TCP/IP to communicate between systems. The DICOM Standard allows for the exchange of files between any 2 radiological instruments or modalities, regardless of vendor, or IT platform, thereby making all imaging equipment interoperable.
