What is a competitiveness cluster ? : What is a competitiveness cluster ? the combination of companies, training centres and public and private research centres,
engaged in a partnership,
to create synergies around common innovative maritime projects,
in a given geographical area.
The Pôle Mer Bretagne and the Pôle Mer PACA are two of sixteen global competitiveness clusters recognized by the French government in July 2005
What is a competitiveness cluster ?: What is a competitiveness cluster ? Randamp;D projects proposed by these centres shall meet four main requirements :
To create new wealth with high added value and to create qualified jobs ;
To be able to position itself on world markets that are characterised by a high potential for growth ;
To go on in-depth partnerships between actors, with a structured and quality governance ;
To define objectives and means of an efficient strategy for economical development et innovation
Financing : Financing 1,5 billions euros between 2006 and 2008
State : 400 millions euros (between ministries of Industry, of research and of land planning)
300 millions euros : tax relief (exemptions on corporate tax and social charges of researchers).
800 millions given by agencies and national bodies (Agence Nationale de la Recherche, Agence de l'Innovation Industrielle, OSEO, la Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations).

EX-TREME : high-speed transmission of data at sea for all types of vessels using radio and satellite link compatibility depending on a vessel’s position,
PIRANA : a new radar head intended for airborne maritime surveillance of fishing, pollution, illegal trafficking, illegal immigration, etc...
SECMAR : a safety system for property, people and facilities within a sensitive maritime zone,
CAPASEATY : it develops an observation andamp; intervention system dedicated to extended marine safety including many risks,
MODENA : a platform for marine environment modelling and simulation of complex monitoring systems. An essential tool for developing new 'intelligent' sensors and surveillance systems.

Engineering, maintenance and services in the maritime field
CORONAV : system for detecting hidden corrosion on the most inaccessible parts of a ship. The inspection system combines electro-magnetism and ultrasound technology.
PAINTCLEAN : environmentally friendly antifouling paint for ships and submerged equipment, composed of biodegradable molecules, some of marine origin.
PRONOSTICS : Real-time prognosis of faults in critical vessel systems. Setting up an e-maintenance platform designed to enable the development of new prognostics technologies for naval systems maintenance.

MARENERGIE uses tidal power to generate energy. It shows the advantages of harnessing the power of wave currents, a predictable source of energy not reliant on weather conditions..
CETOP : setting up a centre of expertise dedicated to offshore exploration/production techniques, for innovation and services for the industry

ITIS : Acoustic technology to improve catch selection techniques,
COGEPECHE: to improve the organization of commercial relations
between the fishing industry and the consumer,

REGICOLOUR : A marine environment surveillance project supported by an operational service that processes, distributes and develops the use of ocean colour data obtained via spaceborne remote sensing,
STRACES : passive sensor for detecting trace elements of so-called emerging contaminants, pharmaceutical product residues,
L–CAT : aims to construct a hybrid vessel prototype (landing barge + catamaran): coastal operations system and landing craft.
