Beginning of written history...: Beginning of written history... Ancient physicians referred to as: medicine man -witch doctor shaman -quack 7th Century B.C. these “physicians” began to study and treat athletes fractures, deformities and illnesses


Beginning of written history...: Beginning of written history... 5th Century B.C. the Greek man named Herodicus became known as the first physician to recommend diet, rest and exercise to treat athletes injuries and illnesses (sound familiar?)


Beginning of written history...: Beginning of written history... Herodicus taught Hippocrates, the “Father of Modern Medicine” Hippocrates went on to develop the discipline of anatomy he also wrote the original Hippocratic Oath that doctors still take to this day


Beginning of written history...: Beginning of written history... 100A.D. the Greek surgeon Galen developed the first surgery to successfully remove arrows from the body Galen also taught trainers and developed techniques to improve an athletes strength


Beginning of written history...: Beginning of written history... Galen also was the first physician to treat injured gladiators first to describe in detail the ligaments of the arms and legs Galen is thought to be the first Sports Medicine Physician


The Ancient Greek Era: The Ancient Greek Era The first Olympic Games celebrated in Greece in honor of the God Zeus warfare suspended - divine peace events consisted of combat arts: wrestling, discus, archery, shot put, boxing, marathon

The Modern Olympic Games - 1896: The Modern Olympic Games - 1896 Women again not allowed to compete Unofficial competitor - Stamati Revithi not allowed to compete in the men’s marathon so she ran the same course the next day officials called her “Melpomene” - the Greek muse of Tragedy (they could see only tragedy, not her extraordinary feat)
