 The instructions I was given said I needed to download authorStream desktop in order to include video or audio with my presentation, which I did. However, I included short clips from some favorite published songs and they didn't upload; only the sound effects did. Can I not include bits of songs for my family's use only?

 To embed linked media (audio or video) you can use authorSTREAM Desktop http://www.authorstream.com/desktop/ - a free PowerPoint plug-in for PowerPoint 2007/2010 ribbon to upload the presentation with audio and video on authorSTREAM.

After installing authorSTREAM Desktop, insert audio (WAV and MP3 formats supported) or video (WMV and AVI formats supported) and upload the file from within the PowerPoint using "Upload PowerPoint" button under authorSTREAM tab. Trimming of audio and video is not supported in authorSTREAM output, only the media with supported formats will ship with PowerPoint and will play fine in authorSTREAM output.
