Review of Problem:

Review of Problem Several authors have contributed towards highlighting the factors which contribute towards the development of microfinance and measuring the impact of these factors in various parts of the world (Albert, 2010), ( Tareen , 2011), ( Qureshi & Heart, 2012), and (Harris, 2012). Two important factors were emphasized in their research by Qureshi and Heart (2012), where they investigated the impact of the fund base and operational efficiency on the performance of microfinance institutions. Latif (2011) emphasized the factor of self-sufficiency in his research and highlighted various elements of self-sufficiency and organizational profitability.

Review of an Article in Detail:

Review of an Article in Detail Non-technical people working in microfinance institutions generally create several efficiency lapses, which many a times results into reduction in the revenue of microfinance institutions and increase in the cost of operations; improper and inadequate internal control systems in microfinance organizations also cause damage to the institutions and build a bad reputation; in order to show effectiveness on paper some microfinance institutions play with figures and at times cook results to make them more attractive for the fund providers (Harris, 2012).

Nature of Research:

Nature of Research Most of the researchers working on the operational performance of microfinance institutions have performed causal research, where they have seen the impact of various relevant factors on the performance of institutes ( Siddiqui , 2011), ( Qureshi & Heart, 2012), and (Albert, 2010; Harris, 2012). Some researchers have also performed exploratory research in the area of operational performance (Harris, 2012) and ( Tareen , 2011).

Type of Data:

Type of Data Latif (2011) worked on panel data for 20 years starting from 1991 in Pakistan. Harris (2012) and Albert (2010) used time series data and generated individual results for the variables under study. Qazi (2011) and Siddiqui (2011) worked cross section data of three majors cities of Pakisan .

Models and Methodologies:

Models and Methodologies Mostly researchers used regression analysis in this area of research due to the nature of research problem (Harris, 2012), ( Tareen , 2011), and ( Qureshi & Heart, 2012). In addition to causal research and regression analysis some authors have also seen the interrelationship of some of the predictors ( Siddiqui , 2011) and (Albert, 2010). Error Correction Model and Auto Regressive Distribution Lag models are also used by some researchers ( Tareen , 2011), (Harris, 2012), and ( Siddiqui , 2011).

Research Design :

Research Design Researchers have generally used a sample size between 50 to 75 microfinance institutions, from target populations ranging from 300 to 400 microfinance institutions; considering the nature of research the unit of analysis in all such researches is microfinance institution; the commonly used variables are outreach, self-sufficiency, efficiency and compliance; the major variables are mostly divided by researchers in many sub variables such as self-sufficiency into operational and financial self-sufficiency; some researchers have also operationalized the commonly used variables in their own way and have collected primary data ( Qazi , 2011), (Harris, 2012), and ( Qureshi & Heart, 2012 ).

Findings, Results and Conclusions:

Findings, Results and Conclusions In this area of research most of the authors in Pakistan and abroad have found somewhat the same results and given similar conclusions ( Qazi , 2011), (Harris, 2012), and (Albert, 2010). Latif (2011) found that three of the four variables are significant. Harris (2012) and Tareen (2011) results showed that all four variables are significant but some sub-variables need to be further analyzed. Javed (2012) also concluded the same of the basis of similar findings.
