Welcome to the School of Aging Studies at the University of South Florida.

PowerPoint Presentation:

Our primary mission is excellence in applied aging research and education. We are one of the oldest and largest gerontology education programs in the United States, and one of the few programs offering bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees in Gerontology and Aging Studies. Our Ph.D. in Aging Studies program is a campus-wide doctoral program, hosted by the School of Aging Studies, but involving faculty from throughout the USF campus. Dr. Cathy McEvoy, Ph.D. Director, School of Aging Studies

Grandpa John needs help programming his cell phone. Great Aunt Edna would like you to download some golden oldies tunes on her iPod. Are you interested in improving the lives of older people? Do you want to know about your own aging process? What can you expect as your family members age ?

PowerPoint Presentation:

What is Gerontology ? Gerontology is the study of the process of human aging in all its many aspects: physical, psychological and social. The aging process begins at conception and follows us through life’s journey to death. Thanks to modern medicine and research, people are living longer. Life expectancy is reaching past 75 years old. This growth in the aging population is expected to continue. Many people associate the term geriatrics with aging or gerontology with the idea that this is the care of “old people.” This simply is not true. The focus is on what happens to people in later life but the central emphasis is examining the issues across the life span and their affects on later life.

With a B.A., B.S. or M.A. degree, students can provide services through agencies, direct counseling of older adults and their families, case management, administration in nursing homes and agencies, entrepreneurial activities, marketing, grant writing, and publicizing hospital programs to older adults. A broad variety of community agencies like hospice, hospitals, nursing homes, and businesses employ gerontology graduates. Many graduates with bachelor degrees go into nonprofit agencies, such as the Alzheimer’s Association, which has chapters in every state or assisted-care facilities, senior centers, or senior communities. The Administration on Aging employs hundreds of professionals. You can also work for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services and at other Department of Health and Human Services offices in advocacy, program planning and education. Gerontology students can enter the justice system as advocates, helping elder violence  victims seek justice against abusive family members, nursing homes or home-care providers. You can teach family members about elder care and seniors about health issues, financial planning and their eligibility for benefits. What can a student do with a degree in Gerontology?
