Our Mission... : 

Our Mission... Humans use language to communicate, and this communication can take many forms: speech and hearing, reading and writing, signing, cueing, and augmentative/alternative forms of communication. At the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, our mission is to foster human communication by: Conducting research. Educating and mentoring scientists, clinicians, and interpreters. Operating teaching clinics . Advocating for and raising awareness of the communication needs and the rights of Deaf people and of those with speech, language, and hearing disorders.

What is Communication Sciences & Disorders?: 

What is Communication Sciences & Disorders? Communication Sciences and Disorders focuses on the understanding the processes of normal speech, language, and hearing, as well as assessing, diagnosing, and treating those with communicative disorders. Examples of potential careers include: Audiologist Speech Clinician Speech - Language Educator Hearing and Speech Scientist Speech-Language Pathologist Interpreter for the Deaf Teacher of Deaf and Hearing Impaired Speech Assistant (B.A. degree only) Audiology Assistant

Speech Language Pathologists……. : 

Speech Language Pathologists……. Identify, assess, and treat speech, language and swallowing problems. Address problems like stuttering, voice disorders, and ability to understand language. Address issues related to education including problems with learning and literacy. May work with individuals who have suffered stroke, neurologic disorders, cancer of the head and neck, cleft palate, or delayed language development. Graduate school is required to practice as an SLP.

 Audiologists……………….. : 

Audiologists……………….. Hearing health care professionals who specialize in preventing, identifying and assessing hearing and balance disorders. Provide treatment for hearing loss including properly fitting hearing aids and other assistive listening devices. Graduate school is required to practice as an audiologist.

 Interpreters……………………. : 

Interpreters……………………. Facilitate communication between people who are deaf or hard of hearing and people who can hear. Must be fluent in English and American Sign Language (ASL), which combines signing, finger spelling, and specific body language. Must pay attention carefully, understand what is communicated in both languages, and express thoughts and ideas clearly. Strong research and analytical skills, mental dexterity, and an exceptional memory also are important.

Where can I work with a CSD background? Public Health Departments Research Agencies Schools Private and Group Practice Colleges and Universities Industrial Audiology Health Care Corporate Speech-Language Pathology Government agencies Court systems Private businesses Other medical, legal, religious, mental health, rehabilitation, performing arts and business.

The CSD Major offers Three concentrations………….: 

The CSD Major offers Three concentrations…………. The undergraduate concentration in Language-Speech-Hearing Science provides pre-professional study that prepares the students for graduate study in: Speech-Language Pathology Deaf Education Doctor of Audiology (AuD). The ITT concentration seeks to educate students to become interpreters for deaf individuals. Language-Speech-Hearing Interpreter Training

Deaf Studies (curriculum currently under review): 

Deaf Studies (curriculum currently under review) Seeks to educate students to communicate and interact with people who are deaf and to apply this knowledge within work settings where knowledge of deafness and deaf culture is essential Prepares students to work in a variety of settings such as social services, vocational rehabilitation, education, etc. with a variety of deaf and hard of hearing individuals utilizing various communication methods, both manual and oral.
