Motor Carriers that operate only within the State of Maryland and DO NOT transport interstate cargo are considered Intrastate Carriers. **Print out application (MCIR-150) along with instructions from www.marylandroads.com/businesswithsha/trucking/oots/MDIDNumber.asp Motor Carriers that operate, at any time, within and outside the State of Maryland or transport interstate cargo are Interstate Carriers. **You can download the application (MCS-150) along with instructions from www.fmcsa.dot.gov . USDOT applications may be entered and processed online. Maryland does not process these applications, you may contact FMCSA at 1-800-832-5660. Motor Carriers MUST update information on these applications every 2 years. *The following vehicles are not required to display a MD DOT #: Farm trucks and farm truck tractors Farm area motor vehicles Emergency vehicles Vehicles operating within 15 days from the date of purchase Vehicles transporting money or commercial paper Vehicles owned or operated by a state or local government School buses operated only under contract to a state or local government Attention Motor Carriers! Legislation enacted in Maryland during 2001 requires that every truck over 10,000 pounds capacity, truck tractor, and bus operated on public roads, unless specifically exempt, must display either a US DOT or a Maryland issued Motor Carrier Identification number by July 1, 2002.* If you are a motor carrier that is not required to have a US DOT # because your vehicles do not leave Maryland and you do not transport interstate cargo, you must obtain a Maryland Identification Number and display it on your trucks, truck tractors, and buses by that date. * Annotated Code of Maryland, Transportation Article, Section 22-404.3. The Motor Carrier Division (MCD)of the Office of Traffic and Safety has been designated as the issuing agency for Maryland Motor Carrier identification numbers (MD DOT#s).
