Tucker, Associate Professor- Nutrition, Terrie James, CEA–FCS, Sevier County, Keith Cleek, CEA-FCS, Phillips County, Trisha Echols, CEA-FCS, Mississippi County, Reyna Alvarez - Family Program Assistant, Sevier County, Venus Parham, Family Program Assistant, Phillips County Why Eating and Moving For Life 4 of the leading causes of death in Arkansas are related to diet (heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes) 1 in 3 Arkansans have high blood pressure 7.9 percent of adult Arkansans have diabetes 61 percent of adult Arkansas are either overweight or obese 14 percent of children 0-5 years are at risk for becoming overweight and 12 percent are overweight 17 percent of school-aged children are at risk for being overweight and 21 percent are overweight Annual medical expenditures related to obesity in Arkansas are $663 million 8 of 10 Arkansans consume less than the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables Objectives Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables Increase consumption of whole-grain foods Increase consumption of calcium-rich foods Increase physical activity Participation Requirements: Participants must have one of the following: Elevated blood pressure Elevated total glucose Total cholesterol > 200 Body Mass Index (BMI) > 25 Extension staff conduct classes on nutrition and fitness with participants. Class Structure Blood pressure and weight taken at least twice during the month Self Assessment Form Nutrition lessons Exercise classes (walk, aerobics, yoga & strength training) Walking Teams Food demonstrations Program implemented in Mississippi, Phillips and Sevier Counties Participation as of April 2007 Total number of participants ever enrolled – 944 Number currently enrolled –247 Number with elevated blood pressure - 81 Number with elevated glucose – 62 Number with high cholesterol – 93 Number improving weight – 88 Number considered overweight – 77 Number considered obese – 92 Curriculum Eat Well For Less (Colorado) The Power of Choice (USDA) Rite Bite (UACES) De Corazon A Corazon (American Heart Association) My Pyramid (USDA) Mi Piramide (USDA) ReShape Yourself (UAEX) Staff involved with the program Enrollment Participants must complete the enrollment form Complete the self assessment form Health Screenings: (administered by a licensed health professional) Blood Pressure Cholesterol Glucose Height and Weight
