ARM Germplasm Manager (AGM):

ARM Germplasm Manager (AGM) Add-In for ARM 8 Gylling Data Management, Inc. www.gdmdata.com

AGM Introduction:

AGM Introduction Database system for managing crop improvement research Is an add-in for ARM version 8 Uses ARM to enter, manage, and report individual trials Uses ARM ST (ST) to summarize and report trial series (ST is also an ARM add-in)

AGM Introduction:

AGM Introduction

Components:

Components Database Use any SQL-compliant relational database. Default is single-user Microsoft Access database. Networked, multi-user DB servers are supported. User Interface Simplifies accessing data in the database. Provides software tools to automate many of the repetitive tasks required to document cultivar improvement.

Database:

Database Relational design links records associated with development of improved varieties. Integrates with ARM and ST to manage multi-year crop performance trials. Simplifies documenting the release of new lines and varieties.

User Interface:

User Interface Point and click interface to find all information related to a cultivar under development. Simplifies entering crosses and selections. Standardizes pedigree and selection naming conventions.

User Interface, cont.:

User Interface, cont. Users typically access the database through two types of dialog: Germplasm dialogs, representing crosses and populations Germplasm Collection dialogs, representing nurseries and cross blocks.

Germplasm Dialogs:

Germplasm Dialogs Include sub-views that display genealogy Backward (parentage) Forward (selections and crosses). Include tables for related information: Trials Documentation Images

Germplasm Dialogs:

Germplasm Dialogs

Germplasm Collection Dialogs:

Germplasm Collection Dialogs Allow users to group together crosses or populations. Sub-views show related : ARM trials (Nurseries) Combinations of parents (Cross Blocks)

Example 1:

Example 1 The next three slides contain paragraphs quoted from the published registration of ‘Expedition’ winter wheat. (Crop Science 44:1470-1471. 2004).

Crop Sci 44:1470 (2004):

Crop Sci 44:1470 (2004) ‘Expedition’ (Reg. no. CV-947, PI 629060) hard red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was developed by the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and released to seed producers in August 2002. Expedition was released on the basis of its excellent winter survival and high grain yield potential in South Dakota and the northern Great Plains region.

Crop Sci 44:1470 (2004), cont.:

Crop Sci 44:1470 (2004), cont. Expedition was derived from the cross ‘Tomahawk’/‘Bennett’ made during 1993. Tomahawk (PI 552814) is a hard red winter wheat developed by Agripro Biosciences, Inc. and released in 1991. Bennett (CItr 17723) (Schmidt et al., 1981) is a hard red winter wheat developed cooperatively by the Nebraska Agric. Exp. Stn. and USDA-ARS. Expedition was developed by means of the bulk breeding method. The cross (coded X93184) was advanced to the F3 generation as a bulk sample.

Crop Sci 44:1470 (2004), cont.:

Crop Sci 44:1470 (2004), cont. Expedition was derived as an F3:4 head row selected by S. D. Haley in 1997. Expedition was evaluated as SD97457 in the South Dakota Early Yield Trial nursery in 1998. It was advanced beyond the Preliminary Yield Trial to the South Dakota Advanced Yield Trial in 1999 because of superior performance. It was tested in the South Dakota Crop Performance Testing (CPT) Variety Trial between 2000 and 2002 and in the Northern Regional Performance Nursery during 2001 and 2002.

Viewing Historical Data:

Viewing Historical Data The next slides show the history of Expedition, as documented in Crop Science, viewed using AGM.

Example 2:

Example 2 A winter winter line, tested as SD97W609, is ready to be released to growers. The breeder needs to prepare a manuscript for publication in Crop Science.

Manuscript Preparation:

Manuscript Preparation Information required for registration in Crop Science includes: Experimental number or designation Names of agencies, organization or institutions Breeding procedures and pedigree Comparative performance data References for parental germplasm

Preparing Data:

Preparing Data Import or enter in AGM the historical data relating to the development of SD97W609 - crosses, selections and trials, dating to 1992. Export trials from AGM to ARM ST for analysis. Print two reports, one initiated from AGM and one from ARM ST, to provide a summary of SD97W609 development and testing.

SD97W609 History:

SD97W609 History View most SD97W609 information using the Population dialog. Print a report for complete information, including data from parent lines.

SD97W609 Report:

SD97W609 Report Germplasm report: Summarizes information in the Population dialog. Includes information extracted from parent lines.

SD97W609 Report:

SD97W609 Report Germplasm report also lists trials for the selected population.

Summarizing Trials:

Summarizing Trials In Population, Data -> ARM Trials, select the trials to be summarized. A menu click starts an ST summary.

Run ST:

Run ST Use ST to select: Traits to analyze Entries to compare with released cultivar

Crop Performance Summary:

List of Summarized Trials:

List of Summarized Trials Compare the trials listed in the ARM ST report with trials listed in the germplasm report to cross-check the analysis.

Other Components:

Other Components AGM also includes tools to simplify many common tasks associated with cultivar improvement, including: Managing cross blocks and pedigrees Crop performance testing and selection Cultivar phenotyping Tracking seed lots and seed inventory Managing historical data

Summary:

Summary AGM is a database plus software interface AGM manages and reports crop improvement trials AGM is an add-in to ARM AGM uses ARM to manage trials AGM uses ST to summarize across trials (ST is also an ARM add-in)
