PLASTICS - Boon Or Bane?:

PLASTICS - Boon Or Bane ? yash1331, 9 th – C, 31

Familiar Sight..?:

Familiar Sight..? 500 billion plastic bags distributed annually worldwide , and less than 3% of those bags recycled. They are typically made of polyethylene and can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade in landfills that emit harmful greenhouse gases. (Time, 2007) 2 Each one can make a difference!

Graph On Whole Types Of Plastic On The World !

What A Mess!!:

What A Mess !!

DUPMED !!!!:

DUPMED !!!! Depicts two million plastic beverage bottles: the number used in the U.S. every five minutes

Plastics - Why So Popular?:

Plastics - Why So Popular? Water-Proof High Tensile Strength As Compared To Paper Light Weight Multipurpose And Most Common n’ Famous Reason :- IT USUALLY COMES FREE WITH PERCHUSED GOODS !!!

Plastics - Why So Unpopular?:

Plastics - Why So Unpopular? Decomposition Non-Renewable Hard To Use Difficult To Recycle Toxic Threat To Animals

How Plastics Are Harmful?:

How Plastics Are Harmful ? Clogging Of Drainages, A Civic Menace. Disposed Plastics Results In Littering, An Eye-Sore. No Natural Process To Degradation. Animals Consume Plastic Dispose In Landfills And Water. 1 Million Sea Creatures Killed Every Year By Pollution Outlet In Sea. Danger To Animal Life !

How Plastics Are Harmful ?:

How Plastics Are Harmful ? Human health hazard Phthalates, a chemical used to make plastics pliable, may have hormone disrupting effects on unborn baby boys; also linked to obesity and diabetes in men ( CBC News (2008), URMC Press(2007)) Enters food chain as it is ingested by sea and land animals

Whales Hail For Help !!:

Whales Hail For Help !! As per Marrickville Council of Australia, as many as 100,000 whales, turtles and birds die have been reported to die every year, mainly because of plastic in their environment. Plastic bags not only have adverse effects on our natural habitats, but have also been found to be responsible for the death of many animals, mainly on account of the suffocation encountered on eating them.

How Plastics Are Harmful ? -2:

How Plastics Are Harmful ? -2 Plastics in land fills emit greenhouse gases which trap heat and contribute to Global Warming ( GW)

Is There A Way Out ?:

Is There A Way Out ? 3R Mantra from Green Peace !!! Reduce 2. Reuse 3. Recycle

Is There A Way Out ?:

Is There A Way Out ? Using Refillable Containers And Bags. Buying In A Bulk Buying Things That Don’t Need Much Packaging, And Buying Things In Recyclable And Recycled Packages.

Something About Plastic:

Something About Plastic Plastic bags take between 15 to 1000 years to degrade. The dioxins and other chemical pollutants released from them are a Serious Threat to be Tackled. Designing eco-friendly, biodegradable plastics is the need of the hour. Though partially biodegradable plastics have been developed and used, completely biodegradable plastics based on renewable starch rather than petrochemicals have only recently been developed and are in the early stages of commercialization. Paper , Cloth, Jute, Cane, etc., are the most preferable but still controversial

Something About Plastic:

Something About Plastic Plastic is the general common term for a wide range of synthetic or semi synthetic organic solid materials suitable for the manufacture of industrial products. Plastics are typically polymers of high molecular weight , and may contain other substances to improve performance and/or reduce costs. Plastic is one of the few new chemical materials which pose environmental problem. Polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene is largely used in the manufacture of plastics.

The Future Of Plastic Is ‘NOT’ In Jeopardy:

The Future Of Plastic Is ‘NOT’ In Jeopardy The future of plastic is ‘not’ in jeopardy “Everything’s plastic, we’re all going to die” says Elizabeth Wurtzel. I do not agree with the statement. Biodegradable plastic seems to show some light, however, they too come with certain disadvantages. When degraded, these emit harmful Co2 and methane. However, here comes recycled plastic curbstone , which acts as a substitute to building materials. In addition, “ oxo -biodegradable” plastics are eco- friendly as when degraded they emit no methane. It’s time we change our opinion Many developing countries like India are banning plastic bags. Instead of banning them, the plastic bags should be utilized elsewhere

Let’s Discuss About A Few Recent Developments:

Let’s Discuss About A Few Recent Developments Plastic used in construction: Plastic building material is strong, flexible, water- and heat - resistant. Recently, a UK-based company has launched a recycled plastic curbstone , which can replace building materials like steel, wood, etc. The plastics are light weight and require little maintenance. Novacem Company has developed a new formula of locking CO2 into construction materials. The CO2 can be recycled with other plastic and glass from torn out buildings.

Making Plastics from Plants!! Wow!:

Making Plastics from Plants!! Wow ! Scientists have come up with a new technology of making plastic from plant. Three bacterial enzymes have been introduced by the scientists in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. When the two enzymes are combined with the plant, an organic polymer known as polyhdroxybutyrate-co-Polyhydroxyvalerate , or PHBV is produced. PHBV is extensively used to produce variety of products like grocery bags, soda bottles, flatware and disposable razors. The plastic when discarded are easily degraded.

Plastics From Garbage!:

Plastics From Garbage ! Recently scientists have made a green polymer from plastics thrown in the garbage which will prevent dumping of post consume plastics in the landfills. Banning plastics is not the real motto to save the environment but the motto is to make plastics in producing wide varieties of products.

Pacti Management (PM):

Pacti Management (PM) Efforts by mega-marts and retail chains in this direction can go a long way.

India Laji Tondon, BJP Candidate From Lakhnow For A Plastic-Less Campaign in 2009 Elections Delhi To Outlaw Use Of Plastic Bags- implementation To Be Carried Out In Phases.

UAE Geant Supermarket Putting Nominal Charge To Discourage Use Of Plastic Shopper Bags (Gulf News, 2008) Gulf News “No To Plastic Bags” Campaign For Creating Awareness In UAE In March,2008.

Other Countries:

Other Countries Bhutan, Rwanda And Bangladesh Imposed Bans On Use Of Plastic Bags (Guardian [UK], Dec. 2008) 7 Supermarkets In UK Sign Up A Voluntary Agreement That Obliges Them To Halve The Numbers Of Single Use Carrier Bags Compared With 2006 Levels. (Guardian, Dec. 2008) National Phase Out Policy By Australian Govt. In 2002 Led To A Reduction Of 34% From 2002 To 2005 Saving 2 Billion Bags From Being Produced.

5R For Plastics:

5R For Plastics Refuse Reduce Reuse Recycle Rebuy

OUR RESPONSIBILITY It's impossible to eliminate most plastic from daily life, but it's prudent for our health and that of our environment to curb the use of some. Overall reduction in plastic usage, proper management for disposal and public awareness would bring a great difference in present situation. Separate .. Store..and hand over for proper recycling or disposal. Do not let plastic litter the environment. Save Earth

Thus it all depends on us how we use it and mange it.:
