It generates electricity inside a cell through reactions between a fuel and an oxidant, triggered in the presence of an electrolyte. The reactants flow into the cell, and the reaction products flow out of it, while the electrolyte remains within it. Fuel cells can operate continuously as long as the necessary reactant and oxidant flows are maintained. A block diagram of a fuel cell : A block diagram of a fuel cell TYPES OF FUEL CELL : TYPES OF FUEL CELL Phosphoric acid Regenerative Alkaline fuel cell APPLICATION OF FUEL CELL : APPLICATION OF FUEL CELL Power sources in remote locations Cogeneration/ constant electric power Fueling stations Base load power plants Small heating appliances Uninterrupted power supply (UPS) Providing power for base stations Hydrogen transportation and refueling Fuel cell efficiency : Fuel cell efficiency For a fuel cell operating on air, losses due to the air supply system must also be taken into account. This refers to the pressurization of the air and dehumidifying it. This reduces the efficiency significantly and brings it near to that of a compression ignition engine. Furthermore, fuel cell efficiency decreases as load increases. Fuel Cell Manufacturers : Fuel Cell Manufacturers Ballard Backlight power Hydrogenics Corporation UTC Power DTI Energy, Inc Proton Energy Systeme Nuvera Fuel Cells UTC Power Advantages : Advantages Fuel cells eliminate pollution caused by burning fossil fuels; the only byproduct is water. Fuel cells do not need conventional fuels such as oil or gas and can therefore eliminate economic dependence on politically unstable countries. Installation of smaller stationary fuel cells leads to a more stabilized and decentralized power grid. Fuel cells have a higher efficiency than diesel or gas engines Most fuel cells operate silently, compared to internal combustion engines LIMITATION : LIMITATION Fuelling fuel cells is still a problem since the production, transportation, distribution and storage of hydrogen is difficult. Reforming hydrocarbons via reformer to produce hydrogen is technically challenging and not clearly environmentally friendly. Fuel cells are currently expensive to produce, since most units are hand-made. Some fuel cells use expensive materials. The technology is not yet fully developed and REPRESENTED BY : REPRESENTED BY JAI PRAKASH 09 ME 160 L MECHANICAL SEC(C) You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
