That's what makes teaching exciting for me. PS: I am a happy p e d a gogue! Welcome to 2nd grade Chinese Class : Welcome to 2 nd grade Chinese ClassSlide 5: When you walk on the hallway down to my class, above hand printing picture is the first thing you can see. I want my students have a feeling of “ownership”. I am so happy to hear they tell their friends or parents: This is my hand printing, this is my Chinese Classroom! My goals: My goals My goals of teaching Chinese can be divided into two levels. Enabling them to use Chinese outside the classroom as a tool for communicating with people through a different language. Students’ self-development as individuals. By learning another language, they may think differently and acquire methods of learning. Language learning process can change their lives and minds in all sorts of ways and help them to understand other cultures in the world.Slide 7: My teaching methodologies include that use discussion in the target language as the major priority. Only the target language is used in class now, introducing the "total immersion" concept for the very first time, with auditory input for the student becoming paramount. I am always trying to set up an authentic Chinese environment for total immersion. I translated lunch menu to Chinese, wrote classroom rules in Chinese, labeled furniture and restroom signs in Chinese and set up a Chinese culture corner. I believe total Immersion should create an authentic learning environment.Behavior Plan: Behavior Plan I believe motivation and attitude influence how and why students learn as well as how they perform. Learning is controlled by the use of reward, punishment, and reinforcement. Therefore, set up an effective classroom behavior plan is essential. The picture below is my behavior plan, left side is in Chinese room. The right one is in English teacher’s room, so that this plan can be consistent in two rooms. day.Slide 13: They all started at green card which means good students. Moving up means great, excellent, moving down to yellow mean warning and blue means thinking time, red means call home. The good part of this plan is they can they can move up and down their clips during the day in many times.Slide 14: Except behavior plan, I also use some different types of motivation to motivate my students. I gave each of them an envelope. When they do a good thing such as speak Chinese rather than English, help their friends, be polite, etc. they can put a sticker in their envelopes. Each month they can use these stickers to exchange recess time or small gifts. This works very well in motivating children.Technology: Technology I am not a technology person. But I gradually realize that use technology can help students in learning and improve their achievement. I have smart board, overhead camera, computer and TV as well in my class. I can conduct skype meeting with students in China, show them authentic China, show them video clips, etc.Learning: Learning In my class, there is more than one type of learning. Students have their own way of learning. Identifying students’ learning styles helps me understand how children perceive and process information in different ways. In my room they can learn Chinese from games, hands on activities( such as use clay to make dumplings) as well as reading books. I leave a big space in my class for children to play games. I also set up a comfortable reading area where they can read Chinese books on the bean bags or in small “tree house”.Slide 20: Game space in the middle of my classroom.Make dumplings: Make dumplingsBooks: BooksTeacher Student Relationship: Teacher Student Relationship The teacher student relationship is very important for me and children for almost. A teacher and student who have the qualities of good communications, respect in a classroom, and show interest in teaching from the point of view of the teacher and learning from a student will establish a positive relationship in the classroom.
