EASD EASD Strategy 2004 - 2007 Mobilising People and Knowledge for Sustainable Development in Africa

Vision: 

Vision EASD’s vision is a network of empowered people leading a new and powerful process of sustainable development in Africa that eliminates poverty and conserves the environment.

Mission: 

Mission EASD develops people, technologies, projects, processes and institutions that enable sustainable development in Africa and globally.

EASD Core Areas: 

EASD Core Areas EASD focuses on research, development and service provision in the following areas: Poverty, environment and development. Environmental information & knowledge management systems. Capacity Building, coaching and mentoring. Facilitation and strategy development.

Poverty, Environment & Development: 

Poverty, Environment & Development Provide new models for sustainable development focusing on poverty alleviation that provides significant environmental co-benefits. Develop projects and initiatives that create jobs and provide human development while conserving the environment in South Africa.

Environment Information & Knowledge Management Systems: 

Environment Information & Knowledge Management Systems Facilitate the development of environmental information & knowledge management systems for environmental management, development & poverty alleviation. Produce and disseminate multimedia environment & development information products that support the sustainable development process.

Capacity Building : 

Capacity Building Provide services for the design & evaluation of capacity building programmes for environmental management. Produce a package of capacity building materials for Environmental information systems, Knowledge Management & State of the environment reporting. Provide training, mentoring, coaching, networking, evaluation & knowledge management services for Environmental strategy development, Environmental information & KM systems, Management of environmental organizations & State of the environment reporting. Develop ways of increasing personal & professional competencies using the natural environments as a key component.

Facilitation & Strategy Development: 

Facilitation & Strategy Development Provide facilitation and meeting management services for environment and development processes. Provide strategy and organisational development services for environment and development organisations and programmes.

Organisation: 

Organisation EASD is a private non profit organization. EASD works through associates, interns, partners and networks to ensure use of the most relevant African expertise for our work. EASD works to create opportunities through internship programmes for Africans to grow and develop, particularly those who have been oppressed by systems such as apartheid and gender bias.

Organisation: 

Organisation EASD is a learning organization. EASD is based in Cape Town, South Africa, and mobilises African expertise for sustainable development. EASD is funded by projects with the United Nations System, African institutions and governments, and other clients. EASD works to promote networking to enable effective use of African capacity.

Organisation: 

Organisation Ownership is vested in the projects and initiatives developed by EASD and not in EASD itself. The intellectual property rights and financial benefits and liabilities are defined for each project or initiative with the core participants. EASD values its partnership with fellow NGO’s, the United Nations System, Universities, African governments and the private sector. EASD believes that the use of indigenous knoweldge, combined with digital technology (including the Internet, film, video and multimedia) are powerful tools that enable us to provide high quality services to our clients and partners.

Geographic Focus – W Cape: 

Geographic Focus – W Cape Develop projects and programmes that provide jobs, alleviate poverty & conserve the environment. Develop environment based economic development projects. Provide, and assist in the development of creative models for education as a key element for breaking the poverty cycle.

Geographic Focus – West Coast: 

Geographic Focus – West Coast Propose alternative sustainable development models and projects that eliminate poverty and conserve the environment in the West Coast region. Provide a strategic knowledge base for environment and development in West Coast Region.

Geographic Focus – South Africa: 

Geographic Focus – South Africa Provide knowledge management solutions for environmental management. Assist in the development of effective state of the environment reporting. Assist the development of effective environmental information systems. Support the professional development of women managers in environmental organizations.

Geographic Focus – Africa: 

Geographic Focus – Africa Provide capacity building packages, knowledge bases and training for the development of environmental information and knowledge management systems and state of the environment reporting. Provide an effective African environmental information service to support African decision making processes. Provide services to improve the design, implementation and evaluation of capacity building programmes. Support the development of the capacity of women in management positions in African environmental organizations. Provide evaluation, training, mentoring and strategy development services to improve the effectiveness of African environmental organizations. Provide programme review and evaluation services.

Geographic Focus - Global: 

Geographic Focus - Global Support the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in the development of effective global and regional programmes. Work in partnership with the UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre to develop effective biodiversity information systems. Work in partnership with the UNEP and other partners to promote the development of effective integrated environmental assessments and environmental information systems at global and regional levels. Support the development of environmental assessment and environmental information capacity and systems in the Arabian Gulf.
