Shell crackers : Shell crackers Shell crackers are used to crack the hard shells of crabs and lobsters. Glasses and cups : Glasses and cups Think about how the different shapes and types of glasses affect a particular beverage. Drinking glasses : Drinking glasses Cold drinks are usually served in a clear glass. Cups : Cups Hot drinks are most often served in mugs made of thick glass or ceramic. China : China There are several pieces of china used in dining. Dinner plate : Dinner plate A dinner plate is ten to twelve inches across and is used for main courses, and also as a base plate for smaller plates and bowls. Salad plate : Salad plate A salad plate is seven or eight inches across, and is used for desserts and appetizers as well as salads, and as a base plate for gravy and sauce boats and sundae glasses. Bread plate : Bread plate Besides being used for bread, a bread plate can be used as a base for jams and condiments. Soup plate : Soup plate A soup plate is flat around its edge, but dips in to hold soup, mussels, and pastas. The soup bowl is smaller and rounder. Specialized china : Specialized china There are a number of specialized pieces of china used for only one purpose. Tureen : Tureen A tureen is a large covered bowl used to serve soup. Snail plate : Snail plate A snail plate has six or twelve indentions for holding snails (escargots). Sauce or gravy boat : Sauce or gravy boat A sauce or gravy boat has a lip for proper pouring. Finger bowl : Finger bowl A finger bowl is a small bowl filled with water used to clean the fingers after eating, especially used with messier meals such as lobster, crab, and other fish.
