Exercise and the Brain :

Exercise and the Brain By: Roberto Hernandez

Secret about exercise :

Secret about exercise Exercise can do a lot for your body and it’s an every day thing. We use exercise to build muscle, lose weight, and just to be healthier. But what we don’t see is that exercise is also helping us become a better learner. Exercise keeps your brain in tip top condition.

What Exercise can do for you… :

What Exercise can do for you… Exercise helps the brain build up neurons that help prevent diseases in old age. It can also have a great affect on emotional and physical stress.

Exercise to Brilliance… :

Exercise to Brilliance… Exercise has a limit on positive affects to your brain. Research mice who were bred to over exercise actually were unable to learn. This inability can be explained by the participant’s preoccupation with exercise. So no, exercise doesn’t make you a genius.

Let’s talk science… :

Let’s talk science… Exercise causes neurogenesis, or the creation of new neurons. These new neurons are created in the hippocampus. The hippocampus consists mainly of gray matter and has a central role in memory processes. Learning requires strengthening neurons through a mechanism called Long-term potentiation(LTP).

BDNF Neurotrophins such as BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) build and maintain the cell circuitry. BDNF not only generate neurons, but protects existing neurons. Other then being protective, the BDNF effects are reparative. This is important because the brain starts losing nerve tissue at the age of 30 years old.

What did you say??? :

What did you say??? Don’t you hate not being able to remember things such as birthdays, names, dates, etc. Memory loss happens as when the brain degenerates as we get older. But there are some parts of the brain that can regenerate themselves. Here is where exercise makes the difference.

Continue… :

Continue… Recent studies show that cardiovascular exercise will reduce the amount of tissue you lose in your brain. You don’t have to be an athlete to accomplish this, all it takes is a 30-min walk a few times a week.

Memory continued… :

Memory continued… A study at the New York University school of medicine found that losing weight can also improve memory function. Dr. Antonio Convict found that people with poor glucose had a smaller hippocampus.

Exercise to happiness… :

Exercise to happiness… People who are depressed feel tired and without energy. People who are active can recover faster from depression. Exercise gives the feeling of confidence back by releasing endorphins or “feel good” chemicals. Exercise can enhance your brain power and it also keeps you happy.

How can all this help you as a learner? :

How can all this help you as a learner? Many studies have showed that students who exercise before school are more prepared to learn new material. They are more relaxed and calm. A little run before a test can help you calm down and focus.
