SCAN and RUN :SCAN and RUN Do you spend hours reading chapters from your college textbooks and then find yourself not remembering any of it? SCAN and RUN is a reading comprehension strategy that will help you retain what you read.

Before you read a chapter in your textbook, SCAN the pages. :Before you read a chapter in your textbook, SCAN the pages.

Slide 5:S Survey the headings and turn them into questions. For example, if the heading said, “Early Writers of the 19th century,” you could formulate the question, “Who were some early writers of the 19th century?”

Slide 6:C Capture the Captions and Visuals Try to understand each caption or visual clue and then ask yourself what it means. (You can formulate questions from these if you find it helpful.) Captions under pictures and tables or charts often summarize what is explained in the paragraphs on the page. It will sometimes save you a lot of time if you just understand the main points that are emphasized in the captions or visuals on the page.

Slide 7:A Attack Boldface words. Key vocabulary words in a selection of text are often highlighted or typed in boldface print. Understanding these words will often help you comprehend the passage’s main idea or focal point. If you are unsure of the meaning of the boldface words, look them up in the glossary of the text or in a dictionary.

Slide 8:N Note and read the questions at the end of the chapter. These questions will help you know what to focus on when you are reading the text. Write the questions down and note them as you find the answer to each while you are reading the chapter.

After you’ve finished SCANning the chapter, RUN with it. :After you’ve finished SCANning the chapter, RUN with it.

Slide 10:R Read the chapter and adjust your speed. An important thing to remember when you’re reading a textbook, is that you DO NOT read it the same way you would read a book for pleasure. You have to slow down and take time to internalize what you are reading. At the end of each paragraph or section, ask yourself, “What did I just read? “ and “What does this mean?” Relate what you read to your prior knowledge and connect it to things that you already know and understand.

Slide 11:U Use skills you already have to figure out unknown words. If you come to a word that you do not know, sound it out. If that doesn’t help, use context clues in the sentence to help you figure out the word. You can also break words apart (into root words, prefixes, and suffixes) to better understand them. If all else fails, use the glossary in the back of the textbook or a dictionary to figure out the pronunciation and meaning of the word. DON’T JUST SKIP THE WORD! It could be a key term for understanding the passage!

Slide 12:N Note and check parts you don’t understand. While you’re reading, make notes of points that you don’t understand. You can either keep reading and see if the information becomes clearer as you go on or you can go back and re-read about those points. Whatever you do, don’t dismiss the points that you don’t understand!
