Slide 2:Are you in a Literature class that is driving you NUTS!?!
Do you wonder how you will EVER comprehend those HORRIBLE “stories” you have to read?!?
Been there, done that!
Let’s see what we can do to remedy this feeling of uncertainty.
Start Small :Start Small Read a few paragraphs or a short chapter.
Pick out 8 or 10 of the most important words and underline or circle them.
For practice, read the first 10 paragraphs of the following passage and write down 8 to 10 words you feel are important.
Little Women
Important Words :Important Words These are the words I chose. Yours may be different but that is fine. Just a difference of opinion.
Christmas winter
poor money
Father pleasures
never dollar
fighting Jo, Meg, Beth
Summarize :Summarize Once you have read the 10 paragraphs and written your important words, summarize what you have read. (Oh, by the way… you must use all of your important words in your summary!!)
In case you need to refresh:
Little Women
My Summary :My Summary Jo, Meg, and Beth are sitting around the fire talking about Christmas. They know there will be no presents. There is a war going on around them and their Father is fighting. Because of the war and their fear of never seeing their Father again, money is tight. They feel that it is sad to be poor. The girls know winter is going to be rough for everyone and each girl has one dollar and even though they know this money should not be spent for pleasure, they agree that since they will not be receiving present from their parents, they can at least buy themselves something nice with their money.
Conclusion :Conclusion If you can do this with each chapter, you will have not only read the book, but by writing the words and the summary, you are getting 2 chances to comprehend the material. It is always good to make notes when you read, and summarizing is a good way to do this. By the end of the book, you will have your summary that will be better than skimming the book again.
HAPPY READING!!!
