Florida Division of Blind Services Florida Blind Services provides direct services to persons who are blind or severely visually impaired. The Daytona Beach office is located at 1185 Dunn Avenue Daytona Beach, Florida 32114 Tel: (386) 254-3800 The organization offers community rehabilitation programs, helps the blind and visually impaired find jobs, and helps individuals receive federal funding & independent living services. They also offer Braille and talking book library services.

UCP of East Central Florida:

UCP of East Central Florida UCP of East Central Florida has provided services to local youth and adults with disabilities since 1969. They serve over 575 individuals each year in Volusia, Flagler and surrounding counties. The main office is located at 1100 Jimmy Ann Drive Daytona Beach, FL 32117, Phone: (386) 274-6474 UCP has an array of home and community based services including an assisted living facility .

Shooting Beauty:

Shooting Beauty Shooting Beauty tells the inspirational story of an aspiring fashion photographer named Courtney Bent whose career takes an unexpected turn when she discovers a hidden world of beauty at a center for people living with significant disabilities. The story focuses on overcoming unspoken prejudices and learning to recognize not just the struggle of those living with disabilities, but learning that they are people first, who happen to have a disability.

Engagement Activities:

Engagement Activities For the Division of Blind Services I assisted an individual with filling out his paperwork for funding for housing. The UCP is an organization that benefits from the Shooting Beauty project screening that I hosted. I hosted a screening of Shooting Beauty at the UCF Daytona campus, and fostered an inviting atmosphere with popcorn and candy! Afterwards there was an open discussion on the positive effects on the movie and the changes it fostered.

Participant Demographics:

Participant Demographics The individual that I assisted with his housing papers, I believe we established, was in his sixties. Visual Impairment Including Blindness means an impairment in vision that, even with correction, adversely affects a child’s educational performance. The term includes both partial sight and blindness. The individuals with cerebral palsy and other disabilities who were positively effected by the positive influence of Courtney Bent’s film were countless.

Course Connection:

Course Connection I completed the TIA project for EEX4242 During my time in the community I was able to better observe assistive technology while working with an individual with a visual impairment. Visual impairment (including blindness) Visual impairment including blindness means an impairment in vision that, even with correction, adversely affects a child's educational performance. The term includes both partial sight and blindness. AT promotes greater independence by enabling people to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing. I also learned about Cerebral Palsy, which is NOT an intellectual disability.

Civic Engagement:

Civic Engagement I think that volunteering is an essential component to building a community. For those who have the time, it is very rewarding and a great way to meet new people. Service learning is an effective hands-on approach to learning that’s almost similar to a tiny internship. It can help build your personal and professional connections while providing a meaningful learning experience in the real world. I recommend Service Learning

Final Thoughts:

Final Thoughts Overall, I found the project to be a great way for students to gain experience as an independent and a great way for them to participate in their own communities. I still plan in completing a copycat project similar to the one in Shooting Beauty , and I actually plan on being more involved in my community because I feel that it needs a change. I think young people need to start being more active and take all of the things that we complain about and turn that into action. Everyone should be able to live in a helping and open environment that they feel comfortable expressing themselves in.
