Elaboration Techniques : 

Elaboration Techniques Tools of the Effective Writer

Slide 2: 

Take a moment to think of one of your favorite authors. Why do you appreciate his / her work. Take a moment to think of some of the more successful authors. Why do we buy their books?

Slide 3: 

Each one of us can become a better writer by employing the following elaboration techniques. Elaboration takes our writing from the mundane to the interesting, even exciting. Likewise, you will be expected to not only be able to recognize the following elaboration techniques, but you will be expected to incorporate these techniques in your own writing.

Action Words : 

Action Words describe / express an act or event Example: The couple walked across the floor. Ok, but boring – better….

Slide 5: 

Elaborated Example: The couple waltzed across the floor and glided effortlessly among the awestruck onlookers.

Adjectives / Details : 

Adjectives / Details Definition: descriptive words (nouns & pronouns): adds support and substance to a piece of writing. Example: It looked like an alien. (gets the job done, but…)

Elaborated Example: It had a huge red antennae and green, lumpy skin.

Adverbs : 

Adverbs Definition: modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. Example: Angel walked down the hall. (boring…)

Elaborated Example: Angel walked swiftly and quickly down the hall.

Allusion : 

Allusion Definition: reference in a work of literature to something that is well known in another work of literature, art, or music. Elaborated Example: He worked like Hercules to finish the task.

Personal Anecdote : 

Personal Anecdote Definition: brief story from your life. Example: Making new friends is important.

Definition : 

Definition Definition: The meaning of a word, phrase, or term. Elaborated Example: Bling, bling means flashy or showy.

Facts : 

Facts Definition: accurate information used to support an idea or claim. Example: Many students in this school need tutoring.

Slide 15: 

Elaborated Example: Since one out of three students earned a failing grade in an academic subject, many of them need tutoring.

Metaphor : 

Metaphor Definition: comparing two unlike objects without using “like” or “as” Example: Every morning you get to start over.

Slide 17: 

Elaborated Example: Morning is a new sheet of paper.

Personification : 

Personification Definition: giving human characteristics to non-human objects. Example: The trees made noise in the wind.

Slide 19: 

Elaborated Example: The trees moaned as the wind beat against them.

Quotation : 

Quotation Definition: a statement of another person Example: People who are alike often stay near one another.

Slide 21: 

Elaborated Example: People who are alike often stay near each other. This is a perfect example of the old saying, “Birds of a feather flock together.”

Simile : 

Simile Definition: comparing two things using “like” or “as” Example: I have a good friend who makes me happy.

Slide 23: 

Elaborated Example: When I am with my friend, I am as happy as a kid on the last day of school.

Cause / Effect : 

Cause / Effect Definition: if / then statements Elaborated Example: If I pay attention in class, then I will pass.

Exaggeration / Hyperbole : 

Exaggeration / Hyperbole Definition: extravagant statement made about something. Example: I am so hungry.

Slide 26: 

Elaborated Example: I am so hungry, I could eat a horse. My son is going to eat me out of house and home.

Sensory Images : 

Sensory Images Definition: five senses (taste, smell, hear, feel, see) Example: The smell was horrible.

Elaborated Example: She could smell the horrible odor of acrid smoke throughout the house.

Location : 

Location Definition: specifies the exact place of an object, person, or place. Example: The clock was on the table.

Slide 30: 

Elaborated Example: The clock rested behind some books at the back of the table.

Superlatives : 

Superlatives Definition: descriptions to the highest degree Example: The man’s new car was fast.

Elaborated Example: The man’s new car was the speediest car on the block.
