& AIA, Bucks County Architecture Award 2002 Excellence in Design Awards Willow Spring Farm Project description: Built to enhance the elegance and serenity of the existing structures and landscape, the new and renovated spaces of the Willow Spring Equestrian Facilities were designed to rival the best of Europe and America.
The 5800 square ft. of total building area features:
· A new Equestrian Exercise Arena designed to complement the original farm architecture and house the mechanism that warms up & cools down the horses. Artfully inserted in the landscape, the building provides a 360 panoramic view of the surrounding pastures. Its size is camouflaged by the arrangement of its parts, it’s relationship to the environment, and it’s connection to circulation patters around the site.
Slide 4:
Description (cont.): · A new two story Stable Barn including box stalls for 4 horses at grade, and a hayloft above. The building’s façade faces the manor house to permit views of the horse stall windows and the rear of the building embraces the breezeway. The interior space invites light, air and appropriate drainage and from the inception, was planned to fit “hand in glove” around equestrian interiors selected by the owner.
· A Breezeway Connector that unifies the separate buildings on the site and allows multiple access points to all sides of the facility. Lined with doors and windows it functions as an indoor or outdoor space to provide light, air, circulation and drainage. The connector begins in a 2-story element at the existing barn and ends in a 1-story element at the new “Exercise Arena”. At the center, the breezeway becomes part of the entire structure as it slips under the upper story of the “Stable Barn” hayloft. Multiple thresholds lead users toward: new horse stalls, the manor house, riding pastures, “the Exercise Arena”, and the newly renovated barn areas.
· A new Renovation to the first floor existing barn. Restructuring and demolishing old stalls at grade made room for new wash stall bays, expanded circulation and threshold widths, and tack and storage rooms.
