Information Literacy: a necessity for everyone The basic definition of Information Literacy, provided by the American Library Association, is: Information Literacy is the set of skills needed to find , retrieve , analyze , and use information . Here is a definition of Information Literacy that is suitable for college students: Information Literacy is the ability to identify an information need and locate, evaluate, and use appropriate resources in keeping with academic integrity and ethical standards.

Concrete examples of the ALA Info Literacy definition Searching a database for a list of attorneys who practice “ family law ” (illustrates the ability to FIND information) Saving the information about all the attorneys that meet your criteria to your flash drive (illustrates the ability to RETRIEVE information) Doing further research to determine which of those attorneys graduated from Ivy League law schools (illustrates the ability to ANALYZE information) Contacting the attorney you believe is best qualified to represent you (illustrates the ability to USE information)

More real-world applications of Information Literacy : A few examples When you are learn about subject databases, you will know which database(s) will be useful for FINDING information about a company when you are trying to prepare for a job interview. When you become familiar with bibliographic citations you will be able to confidently RETRIEVE the items (such as books and articles) that you are interested in examining. When you are aware of biases in the tone or content of a Web site, you will be better able to EVALUATE the validity of its content.
