Photosynthesis :Photosynthesis

Energy and Life :Energy and Life Autotrophs – organisms making their own food for energy. Heterotrophs – organisms getting energy from foods they eat.

Chemical Energy and ATP :Chemical Energy and ATP Cells store and release energy as ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) Adenine, 5-carbon sugar (ribose) and 3 phosphate groups. Store energy as ADP (Adenosine diphosphate) ATP ?bonds break between 2nd and 3rd phosphate group to make ?ADP

Using Biochemical Energy :Using Biochemical Energy Cells need ATP to: carry out active transport. (ex. Sodium potassium pump) produce movement for motor proteins Synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids Responses to chemical signals at the cell surface Cells keep small amounts of ATP, use stored ADP and use energy in foods like glucose.

Photosynthesis Overview :Photosynthesis Overview History Van Helmont’s Experiment – “Did plants grow by taking in soil materials?” – 1600s Took the mass of soil, planted a tree seed – in 5 years it gained 75 kg. The mass of the soil remained unchanged. Conclusion – mass came from water that he added

Photosynthesis Overview :Photosynthesis Overview Priestley’s Experiment He lit a candle and placed the jar over it and watched the flame go out. He figured out that there was something in the air causing it to keep burning – oxygen. He placed a live sprig of mint under the jar and allowed days to pass. He relit the candle and it would remain lit for a while. Conclusion – plants release oxygen.

Photosynthesis Overview :Photosynthesis Overview Jan Ingenhousz Showed that Priestley’s experiment occurred only when the plant was exposed to light. Conclusion – light is necessary for plants to produce oxygen. In the presents of light, plants transform carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and release oxygen.

Photosynthesis Equation :Photosynthesis Equation 6CO2 + 6H2O ? C6H12O6 + 6O2

Light and Pigments :Light and Pigments Photosynthesis requires: Water Carbon Dioxide Light Chlorophyll

Slide 10:Chlorohyll – the primary pigment used by plants to gather the sun’s energy by absorbing light. Two Types Chlorophyll a Chlorophyll b
