Keagan isChecking the Net

Slide 2:

This is Keagan clearing the ice pieces from the main ice hole. This is a necessary part of checking a net so the net comes out without getting stuck on the pieces.

Slide 3:

It is important to monitor children as it can be dangerous if you fall in the hole. Keagan enjoys helping out where he can.

Slide 4:

Keagan has been checking the net for 2 years already at this point. Steady as it goes.

Slide 5:

A good catch. Keagan is taking out a Whitefish from the net. He gets right into it. It is important that you use proper clothes as the fish comes out wet.

Slide 6:

Concentration, Keagan is using a special tool called a fish hook to help him take the fish out of the net.

Slide 7:

This is Keagan Great Grandfather (Chapan) William, he is Keagan’s cultural teacher. William has been setting nets here at this spot since he was Keagans age.

Slide 8:

Learn to do by doing, this is how Keagan will become a master at checking the net. His Chapan has been teaching Keagan how to check the net for two years.

Slide 9:

Another fish, seems to go on and on, but the net is only 100 meters long. Look at how many fish we caught.

Slide 10:

Keagan is showing how it is done. Make sure you hold the fish steady as it will move and squirm.

Slide 11:

Making the grade, Keagan is watched by his Chapan as he takes out another fish.

Slide 12:

Step one move the net away form the fish.

Slide 13:

Step two take the hook and slide the rest of the net off the fish.

Slide 14:

Step three half way finished. The fish is almost out.

Slide 15:

Step four never give up and work, work, work.

Slide 16:

Step five move it again if necessary and keep at it. This is not easy it takes time.

Slide 17:

Maybe it I stick my tongue out a bit it will help.

Slide 18:

Take my glove off going in for the final moves to get the fish out.

Slide 19:

You see this is how you do it. The fish is almost out and soon we will pack it in the Sleigh and snowmobile.

Slide 20:

Hey look at this one it is a sucker.

Slide 21:

This one is a pickerel, we also call it a walleye because the tourist that come visit in the summer know it that way better.

Slide 22:

Whoa stop squirming I need to put you in the Sleigh.

Slide 23:

Oh man I have lots of work to do. I have to pick up all these fish and put them in the Sleigh. Better get busy

Slide 24:

Now we are finished checking the net

Slide 25:
