BEAUTIFUL WOMEN Short Stories Sample Readings Author Janet Littleton

PowerPoint Presentation:

Here are selections from 4 short stories in Beautiful Women . The first reading is from “Homeless,” a story about two characters who love each other despite their different religious beliefs. They share their spiritual views through letters.

Homeless:

Homeless Dear Leo, I don’t hide behind “isms.” I’m not into atheism, agnosticism or skepticism. I am into freewill. I believe in a universal soul, one that is shared among all creatures and nature. I believe our souls guide and evaluate us honestly, so that we will aspire to be kind people who don’t judge others as our religious edicts now dictate. I believe it is up to us to connect and grow spiritually with living creatures and nature, not archaic Biblical stories to guide us in life. Agatha

Homeless:

Homeless Dear Agatha, You have removed yourself from a higher commitment because you fear failure in God’s eyes and the eyes of other Christians. I can see how you have no respect for an institution that intimidates you. My family and I can help you let go of that fear. Jesus will guide you too. I believe atheists turn away from God because they can’t accept the truth. Put down your weapons against the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. You are a rebel and need the strength of God’s army behind you to fight your fears. Much love, Leo

As their letters continue, readers will find out Agatha’s and Leo’s true religious convictions. The second reading is from “Blind Justice on Marley Avenue.”

Blind Justice on Marley Avenue:

Blind Justice on Marley Avenue She followed lights that led to the truck stop and, once parked, ran lightly to the entrance to avoid splashing water from the large puddles of rain. Angela ordered coffee and observed weary drivers sitting with her at 1 a.m. She felt serene surrounded by a room full of travelers. There seemed to be a communion among them. They were not in the safety of their home and enjoying the pleasure of sleeping in their bed. Instead, they were sharing a sleepless night in an unornamented truck stop with their own reason for being there. She wondered if any of them had a reason as dark and satisfying as hers.

What was Angela’s dark and satisfying deed? Was it justified ? The third reading is from “The Carpenters.” In this story, Jeannette presents workshops to help women rebuild their lives.

The Carpenters:

The Carpenters Jeannette had been on a sexual sabbatical for seven years, and it wore her out. To regain her strength, she decided to bare her sexual desires beneath any covers she considered suitable. Edward, her first bedmate, was tall and rather hairy even without his toupee. She helped him make his bed only once. Robert's hair was real; however, a gold necklace and nipple piercing limited their time under the sheets. Retail stores, bars, churches, networking and an ER visit failed to dig up a proper specimen from the heap of males she rummaged through. Worn-out attitudes, broken spirits and improperly-cared for parts were all she could find in the junkyard of love.

The Carpenters:

The Carpenters Unable to build a relationship with a man, she decided to become a carpenter to rebuild herself. First, Jeannette chiseled away the long-held belief that women are less deserving than men. Continue to read to see if her tools build new women.

The fourth reading is from “Music.” Rod is in love with Anna, but Markie, a woman he dislikes, keeps crossing his path.

Music:

Music Turning away from Randy, Ted’s eyes turned to look at Markie. She stood up from her table and looked toward Ted, her glance’s direction uncertain, hidden behind her dark sunglasses. He had only a moment to avert his eyes to avoid this woman whom he found despicable….Ted made a point to leave with his back to Markie.

Music:

Music “ Markie is hot for you. She’s sizzling” Ted’s friend said. “ I’ll never give her the time of day,” Ted countered irately. “ Yea, well I think you’re wrong,” Randy said. “You’ve always liked a challenge.” “ Some challenge, you SOB. She’s the easiest thing around. I’d say getting Preslar’s daughter to marry me is challenging enough,” Ted said. “ Ha,” Randy laughed. “It’s just a matter of time.”

Music:

Music Grateful for the class and grace of his Anna, his thoughts melted into a fantasy filled with her, a woman whom he called his essence. Anna always filled his heart with immeasurable highs. He ravished her very soul and her body. He could think of her only in romance novel proportions. In this story, after a chaotic event, Ted visits Markie in the hospital.

Music:

Music Ted moved his chair closer to Markie and watched resolutely as she continued her story. He was looking for the first time at Markie as a beautiful woman, inside and out, a beauty he mistakenly believed was once Anna’s to claim. Anna’s dark features and dark soul seemed no longer beautiful but harsh compared to Markie’s colorful spirit and passion. Continue reading to see if Ted and Anna celebrate their wedding.
