Sen. Tilman Bishop (R) (ret) Rep. Gerald Kopel (D) (ret) "The Committee to Free the Leningrad Three" In 1980 two Colorado legislators, Representative Jerry Kopel and Senator Tillman Bishop organized a committee called the "Committee to Free the Leningrad Three". The idea behind the Committee was to have elected officials join together and send letters in support of the Samoletchiki prisoners.

Gerald Kopel (D) (ret) "The Committee to Free the Leningrad Three" Although they knew the prisoners would never be allowed to see the letters, the Committee hoped to put pressure on the Soviet authorities. Letter from Our Soldier: Shmul Simchony Dear Russian Jewish Community Foundation, … As you know we had the Gaza war during last semester and I was recruited to help… I missed a lot of school work when I was a way and catching up was not easy. Our school helped the soldiers who were recruited, so I got some help and they took it into consideration. By overall my grades were very good and I managed to “come back” :) … Your help makes the difference in my life. I thank you from the bottom of my heart! May 2009
