1653 – The First Head of Puthankoor Community MARTHOMA I The same year of Koonan Kurishu Sathyam, the puthenkoor community consecrated their Bishop according to an unconfirmed written report from Pope presented by one Anjilimoottil Ittitomman Kathanar that twelve priests could consecrate a Bishop by ‘laying hand’. Thus, Archdeacon Parampil Thoma was installed as the ‘First Mar Thoma’ of Puthenkoottukar. This ‘Pattom’ was later regularised by the visiting Mar Gregorios from Persia in 1751. Hence Puthenkootukar cooperated with the English Missionaries and they exploited this situation by spreading the protestant ideology among Puthenkoottukar. Later Marthoma Church was divided by ultra reformists and they formed their own Church, now known as Evangelical Church.
