Why to study Language ? P. Gurrey “All languages are used for the same purpose... They are used , for instance, for communication, for expressing anything that we have attended to, for recording information, for thinking, for getting what we want, and so on; whether they are used as a mother-tongue, as a second and bilingual, or as a strange foreign language.”

M. K. Gandhi “The mother-tongue is as natural for the development of the man’s mind as mother’s milk is for the development of the infant’s body. It is through the skill achieved in mother-tongue that the child expresses all his feelings and desires and understands the feelings and desires of others.” Thus the purpose of communication through MT begins at the earliest stage of life.

L2 : Target Language, the foreign language (Often but not always the second language being learnt.)

How will MT (L1) influence TL (L2) ? :

How will MT (L1) influence TL (L2) ? Frisby “The process of learning of all languages is almost alike. Thus the skills acquired in the learning of mother-tongue helps in acquiring the skills in a foreign language.”

Ryburn :

Ryburn “Any emphasis laid on the mother-tongue will have a good effect on the standard of English.” P. Gurrey _________________________________ “The teaching of the mother-tongue and the teaching of a foreign language can support and assist each other.”

Slide 16:

If the mother-tongue is well taught, the teaching of it will help the learning of a new language. And if a foreign language is taught on sound lines, the training that it gives the pupil will promote a better understanding and a better use of the mother-tongue.

Language promotes Mental Discipline :

Language promotes Mental Discipline All thinking, reasoning and other mental operations that make use of words help the learning of language. At the school stage, “specially devised practice in the use of their mother-tongue in order to acquire the ability to express themselves with clarity, ease and correctness” is to be given to them. In this way, the child will acquire skill in his mother-tongue and will be prepared “for acquiring similar skills in learning a foreign language.”

Slide 18:

Children who acquire ‘ healthy habits ’ of correct pronunciation, of correct speaking with stress and correct intonation, reading, writing, understanding and expressing in their mother- tongue, will also form such ‘ healthy habits ’ while learning English.

Ryburn :

Ryburn “If sufficient attention is paid to the teaching of mother-tongue and if it is well taught, habits may be formed in the classroom which will be of greatest value in connection with the learning of English.”

P.Gurrey :

P.Gurrey “If a speaker talks freely and fluently in his own language, he can soon learn to speak well and easily in another language, when he has mastered its forms and structures.”

Ryburn :

Ryburn “The habit of speaking well should first be cultivated in the mother-tongue classroom.”

Activities :

Activities A regular practice in speeches, debates, story-telling and dramatics, recitation of poems, etc. in their MT should be given to the children.

Ryburn :

Ryburn “If pupils were given a thorough grounding in the grammar of their mother-tongue, it would make things much easier for the English teacher.”

Ryburn :

Ryburn “Training in grammar in mother-tongue tends to help children in forming habits of attending to correctness in English.”

P. Gurrey :

P. Gurrey “Children who have been taught to read in their mother-tongue well, can quickly learn to read English after one or two years of oral English.”

Ryburn :

Ryburn “Once the reading habit in the MT is formed, it will soon manifest itself in English for the amount of interesting reading is inexhaustible and though perhaps difficult, is not so difficult as to daunt those who have developed a keen desire to read.”

Composition :

Composition Clear and Orderly Expression of Thoughts Words, Phrases & Idioms Sentence-patterns Presentation Style

P. Gurrey :

P. Gurrey “If we train the students to master the same skills in their MT that they need in learning the foreign language, their progress must inevitably increase steadily, and perhaps it will increase rapidly.”

Ryburn :

Ryburn “The strength in the mother-tongue will mean strength in English.”
