Increase awareness about availability of free and confidential counseling and testing services benefits of accessing ICTC services referral services available from the ICTC Increase the uptake of ICTC (including PPTCT) services among High risk behavior groups and bridge population Pregnant women Objectives Slide 3: IPC Materials Mid Media Outdoor Media Integrated Communication Campaign Mass Media Survey – Goals and Objectives : Survey – Goals and Objectives To measure awareness about the availability of free and confidential HIV counseling & testing services among various target populations Awareness about benefits of accessing ICTC services Awareness about referral services available from the ICTC Risk perception among vulnerable populations Motivators and barriers in accessing ICTC services Client’s perception about services To gain insights into the media reach and media habits of the target populations so as to ensure maximization of the reach of the campaign. Study Design : Study Design A cross sectional survey among target populations All 35 districts of Maharashtra -universe of survey. Total Sample Size = 3500 HRG (FSW-BB, FSW-NBB, MSM, IDU, Migrants, Truckers) – 1700 Pregnant women - 450 General Population - 900 ICTC Exit Interviews - 450 Study period – July-August 2008 Comprehensive knowledge about HIV/AIDS : Comprehensive knowledge about HIV/AIDS Self Risk Perception : Self Risk Perception Exposure to various media : Exposure to various media HIV Counseling and Testing : HIV Counseling and Testing PPTCT related issues…… : PPTCT related issues…… Only 3% of pregnant women could spontaneously recall “Nevirapine” and 10% (N = 440) could recall after prompting them. Slightly less than half (46.5%) said that it should be administered to mother and 16% said that it should be given to child. 28% responded that it should be given to both. About 47% respondents said that it should be administered to mother before delivery and 63% reported that medicine should be given to child immediately after birth. 9 out of 10 women opined that HIV +ve woman should deliver at health facility. Only 28% knew that an HIV +ve woman should undergo C-section delivery. Three-fourth of the women said that a woman is entitled to receive ANC services even if she refuses to go for HIV test. Need to work towards improving knowledge among all groups Awareness about availability of C&T is high but not resulting in reporting of testing. This could be due to low risk perception Among HRGs those who did not take the test reported that they did not feel the need for it Migrant and Truckers have low knowledge, low risk perception and low reporting of testing compared to HRGs and even some of the GP Summary of findings : Summary of findings Most effective source of information on counseling and testing for HRG is NGO – ORW & PE To increase risk perception among HRG their interaction with PE/ORW can be strengthened to help them assess their risk To support these interactions IPC materials can pay more attention to self assessment of risk, safe behavior and benefits of accessing counseling and testing Most effective source of information on counseling and testing for pregnant women- Doctor and TV Most of the pregnant women who are getting counseled at ICTCs and are also getting tested Summary of findings : Summary of findings Among general population – TV is the most effective source of information about C&T To continue to reach GP and pregnant women consistently with information on C&T, TV seems to be an ideal source MSM and college youth have similar media habits - Radio, newspaper and also internet (higher than other populations) Majority of clients exiting PPTCT/ICTC did not see or hear any audio visual materials while waiting for HIV test at the ICTCs. Average waiting time was 17-18 minutes Majority were tested the same day but did not receive results the same day.
