This puts too much in the atmosphere and helps to increase the affects of global warming

Land Resources Damage to land resources Mines There are an estimated 500,000 mines in the USA Mines produce many of the mineral resources we need But mining tears up Earth’s surface, destroys vegetation, causes soil erosion, and creates pollution that contaminates surrounding soil and water and destroys ecosystems

Land Resources Agriculture Farmers can produce more food from the land than ever before Extensive irrigation has allowed many dry areas to be farmed for the first time But heavy pumping for irrigation of dry areas is depleting the ground water Over time, irrigation causes salinization of the soil Eventually, the soil becomes useless for plant growth

Land Resources Trees must be cut to supply our need for paper and lumber But, the removal of forests, especially through clear-cutting, can damage land The cleared areas become susceptible to soil erosion and ecosystems and wildlife habitats are destroyed

Land Resources Because of wise land practices, the USA has more forest land today than it did a century ago That is because much of the virgin forest that was cut down has regrown Some forestland has also been turned into tree plantations

Land Resources Landfills Land serves as a disposal site for our waste When done correctly, there is minimal impact on land But, many landfills leak harmful wastes that get into soil and underground water Other sources of harmful waste are buried drums of chemicals (often buried illegally).
