What is WIMAX?:

What is WIMAX? A fourth generation ( 4G ) technology. WiMAX stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access. A Broadband Wireless Access(BWA) technique offering fast broadband connection. Founded by Ensemble, CrossSpan , Harris & Nokia

Wimax Architecture:

Wimax Architecture Offers flexibility to accommodate a wide range of deployment such as small to large scale. Providing a variety of functions such as ASP, mobile telephony, delivery of IP broadcasting such as MMS , SMS, WAP over IP. Supports roaming and internetworking. The range of Wimax architecture is fixed, portable, nomadic, simple mobility and fully mobility.

Connectivity:

Connectivity Devices that provide connectivity to a WiMAX network are known as the subscriber stations . Some of the portable units are: Mobile Phones PC peripherals Laptops Gaming consoles MP3 Players

Features of Wimax:

Uses of Wimax:

Uses of Wimax Providing portable mobile broadband connectivity across cities and countries through a variety of devices. Providing a wireless alternative to cable and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) for “ last mile " broadband access. Providing data, telecommunications (VoIP) and IPTV services ( triple play ). Providing a source of Internet connectivity as part of a business continuity plan.

Wimax Vs Wi-Fi:

Wimax Vs Wi-Fi Wimax coverage is about 30 miles. It provides metropolitan area network(MAN). Wimax network provides Quality of Service( QoS ). It is a high cost network. It offers high speed of broadband access Wifi coverage is limited to 1.5 miles It provides Local area network. Wifi needs effort to stay connected with a specified access point. It is a low cost network. It offers short range of data transfer.

Applications According to Wimax forum, it supports five classes of applications: Multi-player Interactive Gaming. VOIP and Video Conference Streaming Media Web Browsing and Instant Messaging Media Content Downloads

Deployments :

Deployments According to a 4G research report almost 800 Wimax deployments are now alive by the end of 2011. The rapid growth of Wimax is due to wide range of coverage in not only specific areas but also in urban and rural areas. Some of the major Wimax deployments are: 1. Lao Cai , Vietnam 2. Gauteng, South Africa 3. United States

The Wimax Forum The WiMAX Forum is a non profit organization formed to promote the adoption of WiMAX compatible products and services A major role for the organization is to certify the interoperability of WiMAX products. Another role of the WiMAX Forum is to promote the spread of knowledge about WiMAX .

Disadvantages of Wimax:

Disadvantages of Wimax Expensive network Depends on weather condition Power consuming Data rate is slow as compared to fibre optics,satelite and cables

Threats to Wimax:

Threats to Wimax Rouge Base Station:An attacker station that duplicates a legitimate base station. The rogue base station puzzles a set of subscribers trying to get service through what they believe to be a legitimate base station. It may result in long disturbance of service. The exact method of attack depends on the type of network. Physical Layer Threats: Privacy Sub-layer resides on the top of Physical layer in IEEE 802.16 standard, therefore, Wimax networks are open to physical layer attacks for example, blocking and rushing. Blocking is done by activating a source of strong noise to significantly lowering the capacity of the channel, therefore denying services ( DoS ) to all stations.

Water Torture: A common threat to wimax arises from the water torture attack, in which an attacker sends a series of frames to drain out the receiver’s battery. Additionally, attacker with a properly positioned Radio Frequency (RF) receiver can interrupt the messages sent through wireless, and therefore a security mechanism in the design is required.

Conclusion:

Conclusion Wimax can make high speed internet available to much larger areas as compared to wi-fi The Wimax technology offers around 72 Mega Bits per second without any need for the cable infrastructure. Wimax reduces the tariff for voice, video, data etc. Thus Wimax can be said to be taking broadband completely to the next level.
