Sigma is a measure of “goodness: the capability of a process to produce perfect work. A “defect” is any mistake that results in customer dissatisfaction. Sigma indicates how often defects are likely to occur. The higher the sigma level, the lower the defect rate. The lower the defect rate, the higher the quality. What? Copyrright©2008vijtighosh 2 Slide 3: Cont… A metric that indicates how well a process is performing. Measures the capability of the process to perform defect-free work. Also known as “z”, it is based on standard deviation for continuous data. For discrete data it is calculated from DPMO. Copyrright©2008vijtighosh 3 Slide 4: Why have “SIGMA” as a quality measure? Sigma allows comparison of products and services of varying complexity on an apples to apples basis. Also, it provides a common basis for benchmarking (competitors and non-competitors). The higher the sigma level, the better your operation is performing. Sigma measures how well you’re doing in getting to zero defects. Why? Copyrright©2008vijtighosh 4 Slide 5: Bill Smith did not really invented it in1980. Sigma in used to represent standard deviation (a measure of variation)of a population. The term “six sigma process” comes from the notion that if one of has six standard deviation between the mean of a process and the nearest specification limit , there will be practically no items the fail to meet the specifications.
