Comments Posting comment... Premium member Presentation Transcript Matter and Change : Matter and Change Describing matter : Describing matter Properties used to describe matter can be classified as extensive or intensive. Extensive- properties that do depend on the amount of matter present : Extensive- properties that do depend on the amount of matter present Mass - A measurement of the amount of matter in a object (grams). Weight - A measurement of the gravitational force of attraction of the earth acting on an object. Volume - A measurement of the amount of space a substance occupies. Intensive- depends on the type of matter, not the amount : Intensive- depends on the type of matter, not the amount Color Odor Luster Malleability Boiling and freezing points Hardness Density Conductivity Slide 5: Matter that has a uniform and definite composition is called a substance. A physical property is a quality or condition of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substance’s composition. physical change = no change in the composition of the material : physical change = no change in the composition of the material Can be reversible or irreversible Chemical change: produces matter with a different composition than the original : Chemical change: produces matter with a different composition than the original Slide 9: Chemical change clues: Transfer of energy Color change Formation of a precipitate Production of a gas During any chemical reaction, the mass of the products is always equal to the mass of the reactants. : During any chemical reaction, the mass of the products is always equal to the mass of the reactants. The law of conservation of mass states that in any physical change or chemical reaction, mass is always conserved.
