Meaning and Definition: Knowledge management is about applying the collective knowledge of the entire workforce to achieve specific organizational goals. Peter Drucker defines knowledge management as, “Knowledge is power, which is why people who had it in the past often tried to make a secret of it. In post-capitalism, power comes from transmitting information to make it productive, not from hiding it.” Collins English Dictionary defines knowledge as, “the facts, feelings or experiences known by a person or group of people.”

Meaning and Definition Contd…:

Meaning and Definition Contd… From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, “Knowledge management comprises a range of practices used by organization to identify, create, represent and distribute knowledge for reuse, awareness and learning across organization.” According to Abell and Oxbrow (2001), “Knowledge management is the creation and subsequent management of an environment, which encourages knowledge to be created, shared, learnt, enhanced, organized and utilized for the benefit of the organization and its customers.”

History of Knowledge Management:

History of Knowledge Management In 1970s a number of manager theorists have contributed to the evolution of knowledge management. Peter Drucker: information and knowledge as organizational resources Peter Senge: "learning organization“ Leonard-Barton: well-known case study of "Chaparral Steel ", a company having knowledge management strategy

History Contd…:

History Contd… The 1980s also saw the development of systems for managing knowledge that relied on work done in artificial intelligence and expert systems, giving us such concepts as knowledge acquisition, knowledge engineering, knowledge-base systems and computer-based ontology.

History Contd…:

History Contd… From 1990s until now a number of management consulting firms had begun-in-house knowledge management programs. Knowledge management gained prominence during the 1990s as an innovative approach to redirecting the energies and activities of organizations by enhancing the generation, flow and use of internal knowledge. It was only in 1995 when knowledge management in its current form first received significant attention among corporations and organizations.

History Contd..:

History Contd.. By the mid-1990s, it became widely recognized that the competitive edge of some of the world’s leading companies was for the most part due to the robust knowledge assets of those companies. By the end of the 1990s, big businesses started implementing “knowledge management solutions”. Knowledge management became a rage and came to be seen as a highly desirable alternative to the failed Total Quality Management (TQM) and business process re-engineering initiatives.

History Contd..:

History Contd.. In addition, a number of professional organizations interested in such related areas as benchmarking, best practices, risk management, and change management began exploring the relationship between knowledge management and their areas of special expertise. These included reputable organizations like the American Productivity and Quality Council and the American Society for Information Science. More recently with the advent of the Web 2.0, the concept of Knowledge Management has evolved towards a vision more based on people participation and emergence. This line of evolution is termed Enterprise 2.0 (McAfee 2006). However, there is an ongoing debate and discussions (Lakhani & McAfee 2007) as to whether Enterprise 2.0 is just a fad that does not bring anything new or useful or whether it is, indeed, the future of knowledge management (Davenport 2008).
