Living Lessons on Determination Realizing My Present Struggles Are Essential for Future Achievement Character Sketches, Vol. 1 IBLP, 1986, pages 178-189 Information also drawn from CharacterFirst ! & various Character Council & other websites Lesson 1 2 Chronicles 15:7 Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be rewarded.

Definition of “Determination”:

Definition of “Determination” Etymology… Determination originates from the Latin  de-  meaning “to limit or fix completely” and  terminare  meaning “to finish or bring to completion.” Many mountain climbers do not climb from necessity but from sheer determination to reach the top.

vs Faintheartedness…:

vs Faintheartedness… De•ter•mi•na•tion   n  1: firmness of purpose, resoluteness, purposefulness; 2: the process of establishing something; 3: the controlling or deciding of something’s nature or outcome  *purposing to accomplish right goals at the right time, regardless of the opposition * recognizing & pursuing the goals that will bring a project to completion

Who Am I?:

Who Am I? In Nature… Has a wingspan of up to 6 inches Has a very short adulthood Eats leaves From Scripture… Was a deacon Was a street preacher familiar with Greek Was willing to speak truth to leadership

The Cecropia Moth:

The Cecropia Moth A member of the silkworm family, cecropias move from egg to moth in 4 stages… http://vimeo.com/12839950

Slide 6:

Each stage is difficult & filled with dangers… A female lays her eggs so that the long hot days of summer will encourage hatching… Eggs laid in the late summer go dormant until the following spring… Mom needs to lay the eggs on the right leafy structures so the hatchlings have something immediately to eat

Cecropias have a brief life with growth struggles…:

Cecropias have a brief life with growth struggles… The new caterpillar must eat nonstop. The skin does not keep up, so it goes through 5 slow & arduous molts… Predators abound ~ birds, spiders, preying mantises, parasitic wasps & flies ~ looking for that easy meal… http://youtu.be/joHDxo-wQsI

Slide 8:

The cocoon stage! Attached firmly to a branch or stick, the caterpillar spins what will become its home until its transformation is complete. The cocoon consists of three distinct layers – the 1st is a hard shell, the 2nd is an air space filled with wisps of silk, & the inner layer is rough silk (reminiscent of coconut husk). They can be 4-5 inches long!

Leaving home… eventually…:

Leaving home… eventually… A cecropia’s silk making is done by 2 sets of glands… The first set is on the head which emits a liquid which hardens when it hits air, making 2 threads Set 2, nearby, then sends out a “glue” which bonds the two threads together. A cecropia can form from 2-3K feet of silk from which it will make its cocoon!

The final stages…:

Once the moth has made its sheltered cocoon, it undergoes a huge transformation… all the feeding, all the growth, all the trials, lead to its emergence as a new creature… After emergence, it lives only a few days, & up to 2 weeks, its final function being reproduction… http://www.youtube.com/v/Utp7blGB9B8 The final stages…

So what do we learn from the moth?:

So what do we learn from the moth? We live & learn & struggle & finally rest, being made a new creature …beautiful, completely different than our old self -serving nature… As Christians, we become stronger, larger, more able to fly above the world, a new creature ~ a picture of who we are in Christ…

Slide 12:

Unlike the adult moth, which has no mouthparts & cannot eat, we should continue not only to feed ourselves, but also feed others. Philippians 2:4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Our job is not to focus on self, but * on the Lord *the next generation & *to bring beauty to this world… then in peace we return to Him….

When the church was rapidly growing, troubles came….:

When the church was rapidly growing, troubles came…. Troubles can force growth & lead to good changes, if we approach them as a natural part of life… Face the situation squarely on & address it The determination & natural ability Stephen had to minister to needs & promote harmony caught the eye of many people. Acts 6:8 ~ he was “full of faith & power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.”

Impact brings notice which can bring both support & resistance…:

Impact brings notice which can bring both support & resistance… Stephen was becoming well known, especially to the authorities who felt threatened by this new “cult” & its leaders … Stephen’s ministry to the Greek Jews saw many coming to Christ… & evidently eroding thereby the power of the Hellenistic synagogues... So, t o court we go!

Trumped up charges…:

Trumped up charges… Why not just compromise a little? Acts 7, esp. verses 51-3, & then seals it with verses 55-6 Why so furious? Acts 7:54 Was his stoning legal? Acts 7:57-59 What were the effects of his death? Acts 8:1

So, what is our “take away”?:

So, what is our “take away”? The Great Commission does not go away because we run into resistance … Mat 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway , even unto the end of the world. Amen.

The struggles we go through are part of a larger plan, & may be absolutely essential for the success of some part of the body of Christ, our families, & our entrance into heaven itself.:

The struggles we go through are part of a larger plan, & may be absolutely essential for the success of some part of the body of Christ, our families, & our entrance into heaven itself. Eph 2:12-14 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace…
