EMAS Eco-Management and Audit SchemeThink Globally, Act Locally Cyprus

Slide 2:

EMAS is a voluntary Environmental Management System (EMS), under which companies and other public organisations evaluate, manage and continuously improve their environmental performance It was developed as an environmental policy tool by the European Commission in a step towards the Community’s goal of sustainable development EMAS has been operative since 1995 and the latest revision (EMAS III) came into effect on 11 January 2010. Currently, more than 4,400 organisations and approximately 7,600 sites are EMAS-registered

Slide 3:

Key elements of EMAS PERFORMANCE: EMAS is a voluntary environmental management scheme based on a harmonised scheme throughout the European Union with the objective to improve the environmental performance of organisations by committing themselves to evaluate and reduce their environmental impact.

Slide 4:

Key elements of EMAS TRANSPARENCY: Public information on an organisation’s environmental performance is an important aspect of the scheme’s objective. It is achieved externally through the environmental statement which provides information to the public on the environmental impact and performance of that organisation, and within the organisation through the active involvement of employees in the implementation of the scheme.

Slide 5:

Key elements of EMAS CREDIBILITY: The external and independent nature of the EMAS registration and verification process (competent bodies, accreditation bodies and verifiers under the control of the EU Member States) ensures the public credibility and reliability of the scheme including the EMS and the organisation’s information to the public (Environmental Statement).

Slide 6:

EMAS, like ISO 14001, is an Environmental Management System that can be used as a problem identification and problem solving tool that can provide an organisation with a method to systematically manage their environmental activities, products and services and helps to achieve their environmental obligations and performance goals

Slide 7:

In the latest revision EMAS was strengthened: by the integration of ISO 14001 as the environmental management system required by EMAS, by adopting an attractive EMAS logo to signal EMAS registration to the outside world, and by considering more strongly indirect effects such as those related to financial services or administrative and planning decisions. For instance, EMAS is strengthened by the introduction of environmental core indicators, with which environmental performance can be thoroughly documented.

Slide 8:

Main Differences between EMAS and ISO 14001 Commitment to continuous improvement The organisation must strengthen its statement of commitment included in its environmental policy to make provision for regulatory compliance Active participation of employees in the environmental improvement programme

Slide 9:

Main Differences between EMAS and ISO 14001 Environmental Statement EMAS requires that the policy, programme, environmental management system and details of the organisations’ performance are made publicly available as part of the environmental statement

Slide 10:

What are the benefits of EMAS? Cost reductions through enabling an organisation to identify opportunities for better management of resources, increase efficiency and saving energy Risk minimisation through the assessment of operational procedures, as an organisation can find possibilities to reduce associated risk levels. Effective risk management can generate financial benefits by increasing trust amongst shareholders, investors, insurance companies and financial institutions.

Slide 11:

What are the benefits of EMAS? Regulatory compliance through becoming familiar with relevant regulatory requirements and be better prepared to tackle regulatory issues in an organised way leading to better relations with regulators Improved relations with employees through their involvement in the development of the EMS that can in turn lead to improved morale and a better implementation of the EMS

Slide 12:

What are the benefits of EMAS? Competitive advantage Finally, EMAS registration can lead to increased market access and improved relations with customers. Both the EMAS logo and the environmental statement can be used in marketing and communication activities. The EMAS logo can become a powerful marketing tool

Slide 13:
