Simple Present Tense:

Simple Present Tense Indicates habits, routines and facts. We use the auxiliaries DO and DOES when we refer to actions in the present. DO and DOES: are used in questions, negative answers, or positive short answers. NOTE: When a verb is with an auxiliary, it is ALWAYS in its basic form with no ‘s’

The form of the simple present:

The form of the simple present STATEMENTS In first and second person ( I, We, They, You) : SUBJECT + BASE FORM OF THE VERB In third person (She, He, It): SUBJECT + BASE FORM OF THE VERB WITH ‘S’ QUESTIONS In first and second person (I, We, They, You ): DO + SUBJECT + BASE FORM OF THE VERB WH + DO + SUBJECT + BASE FORM OF THE VERB In third person (She, He, It ): DOES + SUBJECT + BASE FORM OF THE VERB WITH NO ‘S’ WH + DOES + SUBJECT + BASE FORM OF THE VERB WITH NO ‘S’

AFFIRMATIVE :

AFFIRMATIVE First person SUB. + VERB I work Second Person SUB. + VERB They run You dance We sleep The secretaries talk. Third person SUB + VERB (‘S’) She work s He pray s It play s The teacher teach es

SIMPLE QUESTIONS:

SIMPLE QUESTIONS First person AUX+SUB+VERB Do you work? Second Person AUX+SUB+VERB Do they run? Do you dance? Do we sleep? Do the secretaries talk? Third person AUX+SUB+VERB Does she work? Does he pray? Does it play? Does the teacher teach?

NEGATIVE :

NEGATIVE First person SUB + AUX + VERB I don’t work. Second Person SUB + AUX + VERB They don’t run. You don’t dance. We don’t sleep. The secretaries don’t talk. Third person SUB + AUX + VERB She doesn’t work. He doesn’t pray. It doesn’t play. The teacher doesn’t teach.

Information Questions / WH:

Information Questions / WH First person WH+AUX+SUBJ+VERB What do you do ? Second Person WH+AUX+SUBJ+VERB Where do they run? When do you dance? Third person WH+AUX+SUBJ+VERB What does she do? Why does he pray ? Note: DO is an auxiliary for the present simple, but it is also an action.
