slide 1: Valentines Day A Brief History
slide 2: Introduction ● Valentines Day also called Saint Valentines Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine
was established by Pope Gelasius I in AD 496 to be celebrated on February 14 in
honour of Saint Valentine of Rome who died on that date in AD 269. ● The day became associated with romantic love in the 14th and 15th centuries. This
was an era when romanticism and courting flourished. In 18th century it turned
into an occasion when couples expressed love by exchanging gifts. The lovers
were called “valentines”. ● Although it not an official public holiday in any country it is an official feast day
for the Anglican Communion and the Lutheran Church.
slide 3: Backdrop It is said that Roman Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriages for young men since he believed that it
would make them better soldiers. A Roman priest named St. Valentine defied those orders and continued to marry couples in secret. This
was soon found out and the Emperor persecuted him by beheading on 14th February in 296 AD.
slide 4: Backdrop Another legend tells us that it was not a Roman priest who defied the orders of the
Roman Emperor. Rather it was Saint Valentine of Terni who committed the act of defiance. He too
was beheaded by Claudius II outside Rome
slide 5: Origins Pope Gelasius declared 14th February as St. Valentine’s Day in 496 AD in honour of
St. Valentine. However it was not until much later the day became associated with the
theme of love. The great English poet was the first person to associate Valentine’s Day with romantic
love in his poem “Parliament of Foules” in 1375. In present times Valentine’s Day is a part of a pop-romantic culture. As such it is
observed and celebrated with due diligence every year throughout the entire world
irrespective of religion.
