Why they share information? The majority of these companies do not call themselves data broker they call themselves retailers. They are saying that they do that to help businesses and companies to target more customers by understanding what customers want, and what costumers might be interested in to buy.

Is it legal or illegal? Is it ethical or unethical? N o law can prevent companies from sell customers information. If customers did not ask the companies to not share his/her information then they will sell it to other companies. Customers have the rights to ask companies to not share their information, but if you do not know your rights then they will sell your information right away. That makes it unethical in my opinion. The average consumers have no idea that their intimate personal details are up for sale and that could be privacy risk.

Why the government can not stop them from doing it? :

W hy the government can not stop them from doing it? A company called Acxiom recorded $1.1 billion in sales in 2011 offering "analytical services" on 144 million households. Big-data industry. Data is now a $300 billion-a-year industry and employs 3 million people in the United States alone. This will impact the economy for both consumers and for businesses.
